2014 JOHN DEERE CLASSIC WINNER BRIAN HARMAN HOISTS THE CHAMPIONSHIP TROPHY. HARMAN EARNED HIS FIRST PGA TOUR WIN AND A TRIP TO THE BRITISH OPEN AT HOYLAKE.
Brian Harman won for the first time on the PGA Tour when he held off his Georgia neighbor Zach Johnson by one shot.
Harman carded a final round 6 under par 66, while Johnson closed with a 7 under par 64. Harman said he trusted his game on a tough day. Johnson tried to put some pressure on Harman but said “nothing seemed to phase (Harman) today.”
With the win Harman then boarded the John Deere jet and headed off with 24 other players to the British Open.
Harman started the day with a one shot lead, but quickly expanded it when he hit his approach shot on the par 5 second hole to four feet. From there Harman made the eagle putt and was off and rolling.
Tim Clark briefly caught Harmon on front nine before falling back, later it was Johnson who playing ahead of Harman that played into a tie for the lead. But Harman made birdies on holes 14,15,and 16 to take control for good.
It was not the final round that three time JDC champion Steve Stricker expected as he could get nothing going, and the birdie putts just did not fall all day. Stricker had some lip outs that hurt him and eventually took any steam out of a fourth round charge.
Jhonattan Vegas shot a final round 65 to tie for third place with Jerry Kelly at 19 under par. Kelly played bogey free all weekend.
Defending USGA Publinks Champion and WGA Western Amateur defending champion Jordan Niebrugge had a great week playing on a sponsor’s exemption from the john Deere Classic. Not only did Niebrugge make the cut and become the tournaments low amateur player, but finished at 10 under par. He says he is ready to defend his Publinks title this week in Kansas, he turned out to be a great pick by JDC tournament director Clair Peterson to be a sponsor’s exemption.
Mark Wilson of Elmhurst wrapped up the tournament at 5 under par, Wilson told the Gog Blog that he is starting to play better in a year where he has not played well. He is hoping to finish the year on a strong run and is looking forward to playing at the Canadian Open and in Tahoe in a few weeks.
