MIKE KEISER a golf course builder who says he loves to build fun golf courses, is ready to build another “across the pond” as they say in Scotland.

Keiser along with Todd Warnock, land owner Edward Abel Smith and the Embo Trust. Urras Euraboil have announced that a document was submitted yesterday regarding the development of the proposed Coul Links- an 18 hole golf course on the coast of Scotland north of Embo-Sutherland.

The design team of Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw will create the links golf course, their first design in the country of Scotland.

The planning document was submitted with an outline of the economic and the environmental considerations, and done only after carefully planned input from community leaders and public officials.

“We have worked meticulously with the Scottish authorities and the local community to refine our layout such this this special site is protected and enhanced environmentally, and also serves as an economic catalyst similar to Mike’s projects in Bandon and Cabot,” said Warnock.

“Coul Links is a special site that will inspire two of the best course architects in the world to design a classic true links,” said Keiser. “It’s location, less than 1.5 miles from the legendary Royal Dornach Golf Club and several others a short drive away, will likely establish a third major destination of Scottish golf.”

Coore and Crenshaw are thrilled to have such an opportunity to design a links course on the Coul Links site.

“I’m not sure I’ve seen a more spectacular site for golf,” said Coore. “It’s a humbling honor to build a golf course in the home of links golf.”

The team has also announced that that Chris Haspell, the former Course Manager at Castle Stuart will be the project manager.

There will be more public consultation events in the next couple of months, and should the Highland Council approve the plan, construction will start in spring of 2018.

It’s not uncommon to hear the term Pure Michigan Golf, especially when one looks at golf in the great lakes area.

While there are plenty of places to play in Michigan, the Boyne Resort chain that is comprised of three properties, is also home to ten golf courses.

All of the the three properties are within 1 hour of each other. They include Boyne Mountain Resort, Boyne Highlands Resort, and the Bay Harbor and Inn at Bay Harbor.

Bay Harbor the Arthur Hills designed course that partially sits right on the water, is considered by many to be the flagship Boyne golf property.

The Par 3, 4th hole on the Bay Harbor Links course.

Bay Harbor golf course is made up of 27 holes, the Preserve, the Links and the Quarry. While most golfers consider the Links-Quarry rotation the premier routing, the Preserve 9 is one that golfers will enjoy.

The Preserve nine is cut through the trees, and has some good elevation change on it. The final hole is par 3, that has the bay running down the left side of it. Get the camera’s out here.

The Links nine starts out with a dogleg right par 4, then moves inland before coming back out along the water. The course moves in and out before finishing inland on hole nine. The Quarry nine works through the woods, until it opens up in the third fairway with views of the quarry holes and the water. The 27 holes of Bay Harbor create great routing no mater which 18 you play, or make a case for a 27 hole day, all the better.

The Par 4 16th hole at Crooked Tree Golf Club.

Across the street from Bay Harbor is Crooked Tree golf club, that had some renovation work done a couple of years ago.

The course now is in great shape and poses a great variety of challenges for golfers to overcome. The course will test your game while remaining fun for players of all skill levels.

Crooked Tree is home to a full range and practice area, along with villas along holes 9 and 18 for those looking to spend a few nights. The grill has a great menu for before, during, or after your round.

The opening hole at Boyne Mountain’s Monument Course, a dogleg right Par 5, commands a solid approach shot.

At Boyne Mountain there are two courses and 36 holes to play. The Monument course and the Alpine course.

The Monument is a monument to some of the games greatest players. There are plaques on each hole by the tee boxes. Peggy-Kirk Bell, Bobby Jones and Sam Snead to name a few.

The first hole is one of the best on the golf course, a great downhill off the tee, that doglegs right, and drops down again near the green protected by a large sand valley type bunker in front. The railroad ties give the hole a Pete Dye style look, even though Dye did not design the golf course.

The Alpine course has it’s share of rolling terrain through a valley, where navigating some strategically placed trees is the key. From the second green to the third tee box is a small covered bridge to use, if your walking.

The Par 5, 13th hole at the Arthur Hills Course at Boyne Highlands Resort.

Boyne’s third property is the Highlands, which is the furthest north of the three properties. It is home to four courses, including the Heather, the Hills course, and the Donald Ross course that’s a nice tribute to the famed architect. The 18 holes on the Ross course are inspired by some of the great Ross holes from some of his well known courses.

For more information on Boyne Golf, please visit Boynegolf.com. There are plenty of great golf options at all of the properties, places to stay and food and beverage are of great quality and quantity. Golf season is not quite over in northern Michigan, but if you want to go this year, make your plans now. There is barely 30 days left before the courses close.

STOATIN BRAE THE NEW COURSE AT GULL LAKE

Your on the first, at Stoatin Brae Golf Links, part of the Gull Lake Resort, in Augusta Michigan.

Gull Lake Resort in Augusta Michigan, yes that’s right Augusta. What a town name for a place with a golf course or three.

In the case of the Gull Lake Resort in Michigan, resort president Jon Scott and his family have six courses and a bunch of overnight villas to stay in.

But if your flying through the state of Michigan and playing several of the Pure Michigan Golf courses, the new Stoatin Brae should make your list of a must play golf course.

The Par 4, 10th hole at Stoatin Brae golf links part of Gull Lake Resort.

Stoatin brae did a soft opening in late 2016, when 12 holes opened for play.

By the start of the 2017 season the entire golf course was ready to go. The course was designed by Tom Doaks Renaissance Golf team from Michigan.

The golf course is of the links style and there are not many trees or bushes to be found. While the fairways are pretty generous, if you miss them and the first and second cut of rough, you will land in some pretty tall grass (weeds) and you can probably say goodbye to that golf ball. So do make sure you have a few spares in the bottom of your golf bag.

The halfway or almost halfway bunker, is not really a halfway house.

At the bottom of an area with some crafted mounds, sits the “halfway bunker” because it’s underground and really doesn’t come across as a halfway house. Regardless it’s a very pleasant change from the little white shack found at most golf courses.

In fact considering Doaks work at Old MacDonald at the Bandon Dunes resort in Oregon, it wouldn’t be surprising if this halfway bunker was inspired by the one at Old Mac.

The Par 3, 11th hole is one of the best holes on the golf course.

Stoatin Brae gives the golfer a good chance to settle in. The first hole in straight in front of you, even though the second shot is likely to be a blind one coming in, to a green that sits down in a bowl like area.

The property starts to mix it’s open links style land, in with a small amount of trees and bushes on holes 6 and 7.

While the front nine is very good, the back nine seems to jump start the round. There is a little more elevation change along with more holes, that have more going on in terms of bunkers and green complexes.

The 68th Illinois Open is a runaway, and it’s 2017 Illinois Amateur Champion Patrick Flavin who is running away with the championship.

Flavin is bidding to join David Ogrin as the player to win both the state amateur championship and the state open in the same year.

Flavin backed up his 64 at Briarwood Country Club in Round 1, with another 64 at the Glen Club in Round 2. His score of 128 leaves him at 15 under par, and he has a six shot lead over Brandon Holtz and past Illinois Open Champion Eric Meierdierks. His lead is 7 shots over defending champion Carlos Sainz Jr. and University of Illinois standout from Northbrook Nick Hardy. Both Sainz and Hardy put themselves on page 1 of the leader board with 8 under par 64’s at the Glen Club.

Patrick Flavin with the Illinois State Amateur trophy two weeks ago at Calumet Country Club.

Flavin says he is “keeping it simple and enjoying the round.” During round one Flavin had his girlfriend as his caddy, but when she got called into work on Tuesday, he put his brother back on the bag. Flavin won with his brother at the amateur, and says he has a tough decision to see who to put on the bag for round three.

Flavin admits, it really whoever wants to do it.

For the third straight day, Flavin will be paired with Meierdierks who says “Flavin is playing great and has been fun to watch.”

What was fun to watch was the shot of the day, and it did not belong to Flavin. Dakun Chang holed a five-iron on the par 5, 14th hole from 205 yards for a double-eagle 2. Unfortunately for Chang, it did not help him make the cut.

The purse as of Tuesday night is at least $95,000 with the winners check expected to be near the $17,500 it was in 2016.

Of the starting field of 268 players, just 51 made the cut. All groups in round three will tee off from the first hole, and the first starts at 8 AM. The leaders tee off at 10:40 Am.

If he wins the championship, Flavin since he is an amateur, will not get paid in cash. He will receive a trophy and gift certificate in the Glen Club pro shop.

It’s nice to be back putting out the content on Golfers on Golf Dot com.

I have a stock pile of things to write about so stay clicked in, there will be plenty of golf stuff for you to catch up on.

The radio show is done for the year as summer has already passed us by. 23 weeks went by real quickly, and I’m already thinking about how to be better in 2018. Stay tuned.

With the daily grind of baseball now ending, and the golf tournaments of the summer behind us, I plan to be out on the course a little more, and checking out some renovation projects in the area. Most courses are finding ways to get better and offer more, if your not. You are falling behind the competition. Whether your next improvement project is the golf course, the practice area, the clubhouse, or something else. It’s time to improve, somewhere on your property. Show your customers and potential new customers that you care, and your not afraid to invest back into them and the golf experience they get when they come to your golf facility. Both rounds of golf and F&B dollars are up, at facilities that have made improvements.

In the fitting bay at True Spec Golf in Highland Park.

A FEW WEEKS back I went to the new True Spec Golf Fitting lab in Highland Park.

I elected to have their team investigate my issues with fairway woods on the golf course.

They put me through tests with Titleist clubs, my original Titleist’s, new model Titleist woods, Callaway, Taylor Made and Ping products.

In the end it was the Callaway Steelhead fairway woods that tested out the best for me. As a result I now have a Steelhead 3 wood and 5 wood in the bag. When I headed to Northern Michigan for my golf getaway at the new Stoatin Brae golf course and Boyne golf properties last week, before making a final stop at the historic Belvedere golf course, I put both new woods to the test.

At Boyne Mountain with my Callaway Epic Driver, and two Callaway Steelhead woods.

First up my Epic Driver with the new Fujikura Speeder is locking in, over seven rounds I hit a solid majority of fairways. At least 70% except for one round, where a majority of my drives hit the fairway, but didn’t end up in the fairway.

The fairway 5 wood Steelhead was solid from the get-go. Not only did I get a distance increase over my old 5 wood, but it held the line better. The changes on the new five wood, was a half degree of loft added, and a minor change in the swing weight. I found I don’t need to swing as hard with this club to get the results I’m looking for. The fitting process on the 5 Wood was a solid home run.

My 3 Wood is a different story. It started off very slow. I topped the first shot I hit with it and the ball only went 135 yards. The second swing saw the ball travel about 210, and go left into a short grass fescue area. What I took into account is that the lies I had were not the greatest, on the new Stoatin Brae Course that is in it’s first year of being open. My full story on that course (which I like) is coming soon.

The tenth hole at the new Stoatin Brae golf course part of the Gull Lake Resort, in Augusta Michigan. (near Kalamazoo)

When I got the nerve up to try the 3 Wood again at Bay Harbor, the first shot was not what I was looking for. But at first if you don’t succeed….etc.

On the seventh hole of the Bay Harbor Links course that runs along the water, I decided the time was right to go for the green in two on this par 5 from 244 yards out.

Well I got there, except the ball didn’t stay there. It ran over the corner of the green, and along side the leftside of the green. But now this was still something I had not had in a while. A 50 foot pitch on a 535 yard par 5, for Eagle. The next day I used the club only twice. On a par 5 at the Boyne-Crooked Tree Golf Club, the result from 260 was an easy pitch on my third shot, and a good par on a long par 5.

The fitting lab at True Spec Golf in Highland Park.

That afternoon back on the Links 9 at Bay Harbor, on the same seventh hole, got home from 247 and had an Eagle putt. Okay, almost a 100 footer, but still I do like eagle putts.  The 3 wood survived a test at Belvedere in my final round, coming up just short of a par 5 green from 260. I still might need to hit the three wood a little more to be totally comfortable pulling it more often, but it is moving into a comfort zone I no longer had with my old 3 wood.

Regardless of the brand of clubs you are playing, the bottom line is that fitted golf clubs make a difference. My fairway wood game is back in the bag again, and the results show on the course and most importantly on the scorecard.

The results I got were also consistent no matter what golf ball I played during the trip. I did play the Titleist Pro V1 the Pro V1x, and the Callaway Chrome Soft and Chrome Soft X. As for golf balls, I have played the Titleist Pro V1 and mostly the Pro V1x golf ball since they hit the market, the Callaway Chrome ball might not be a better ball than the Pro V, but it no longer trails the Titleist Pro V models by a wide margin. It’s in the back seat of the car, looking over the Pro V’s shoulder. If Callaway brings the Chrome golf ball to the market for a better price than the Pro V’s, the average golf consumer will have a decision to make.

The biggest question I have now, is about my wedges. Have my older Titleist Vokey’s seen their best days, and is it time for Vokey SM-6 models, or the new Mack Daddy by designer Roger Cleveland at Callaway. I hear my self being called back to the fitting room, to correct another phase of my game. Truespecgolf.com in Highland Park.

KUDO’s to Captain Steve Stricker and Team USA, there will be no protests, or kneeling during the anthem’s during this weeks Presidents Cup Matches.

FALL GOLF IS HERE and the time frame is about 5 more weeks of good weather to enjoy the nice fall golf season. It’s a nice time of the year to play, courses can be less crowded but not always. Cooler temps, and the colors shine through. Yes, too many leaves on the ground, but the best courses suck them up and grind them up, instead of just blowing them around.

Plenty more golf news ahead, so stay clicked in. RS

BELVEDERE CELEBRATES 95 YEARS OF GOLF

The Belvedere Golf Club in Charlevoix Michigan recently celebrated 95 years of being a golf club.

The re-dedication ceremony of the club included more than 125 of the clubs members in attendance.  Only 12 of the clubs 200 members live in Charlevoix.

This recent re-dedication was in honor of some renovation work done to the Willie Watson classic, after a set of original plans were found during the demolishing of an old building in the town of Charlevoix. The club does have some aerial photo’s from the 1930’s, but there had be no documentation of the parkland course until the recent finding of original plans.

The plaque near the first tee from the recent dedication.

Bruce Hepner was the consulting architect for the project, who worked alongside the clubs superintendent Rick Grunch. Grunch part of Belvedere for 25 years, lives alongside the golf club in a neighboring farm-house.

Hepner, who formerly worked under Tom Doak, has done restoration work of courses by Donald Ross, AW Tillinghast and now Watson to name a few.

Grunch’s knowledge of the course, and study of the newly found plans and photo’s was critical to the renovation. The work included building new bunkers, the reshaping of contours to tie in with existing ground conditions and flow of the property. Area’s of the green complexes were expanded back to the original size to allow strategies of playing the course to return to what Watson originally intended.

The first hole on the right, from the elevated first tee box.

“The restoration was a labor of love for me,” said Grunch. “To return the golf course to what Watson originally envisioned was a special gift, The Belvedere is my life.”

Belvedere has been played by 36 major champions of professional golf, who have over 100 major champion wins between them. Only Oakland Hills in the state of Michigan has had more major wins play the course.

Belvedere has been home to the state of Michigan amateur for over 40 years. The Michigan Golf Association will bring the amateur back to Belvedere for the clubs centennial year in 2022.

For more information on this semi-private club see Belvederegolfclub.com.

This past week there was yet another successful BMW Championship, and for the third time it was done at Conway Farms Golf Club in Lake Forest.

It was a great week to see the money come in to support the Evans Scholars Foundation. A hole-in-one by Jason Day helped even more, not only from the 100K donated by BMW, but the BMW car that Day won was also donated to the scholars as well.

The BMW Championship that won by Aussie Marc Leishman, now moves on to Aronimink Golf Club outside of Philadelphia in 2018. In 2019 it then comes back to Chicago when it makes a stop at Medinah. Then where does the championship go in 2020. First up on the tee is BMW, the contract expires after Medinah and it’s not known if they renew or not. If they do, the first year of a new deal could take them out to Colorado again. While Cherry Hills might not be in the mix, Castle Pines could be. Stay tuned.

I found it amusing that Justin Rose who won the BMW Championship in 2011, the last year at Cog Hill, told me that he would like to see the championship go back to Cog Hill. Tour players always like to go back to places that they previously won at. I told Rose about the recent changes to the bunkers on Dubs, that includes the new tour edge white sand. Rose said the sand fits his eye and game. Could the BMW ever go back to the south side of Chicago, well not likely. Not enough dealerships down that way selling BMW’s.

BUT COULD A WESTERN OPEN go back to Cog Hill. Great story by Alex Miceli in the online golf publication called The Morning Read, where the question is asked, could the Western Open return. The are several reasons why it could, including the fact that the famed 4th of July dates could open up again with a Greenbrier pullout from the tour.

The real question is could the Western Golf Association benefit by a Western Open, and at times take on a BMW Championship as well. Well running or managing tournaments is what the WGA does. Next year the WGA will manage the Sr. Players Championship at Exmoor Country Club.

MARC LEISHMAN said the biggest improvement in his game this year is his driving, and gave credit to his new Callaway Epic Driver. I can see why, I having been playing the Epic driver now for three months and it has made a difference in my game. More coming up on that in the days and weeks ahead, along with new Callaway Steelhead fairway woods now in my bag.

THIS WEEK, taking it easy and playing golf in Michigan. Tried out the new Stoatin Brae at Gull Lake and Bay Harbor Golf Club at Boyne Resorts. More on this visit will be posted soon. Have a great week everyone. RS

2017 BMW Champion Marc Leishman takes questions after Sundays final round at Conway Farms in Lake Forest.

THE GOG BLOG by RORY SPEARS, Editor and Director of Content. Follow Rory on Facebook, Linkedin and Twitter @GogBlogGuy and all this week ahead at Boyne Golf Properties in Michigan, plus from the new Stolten Brae Course at Gull Lake Resort.

If you had bet an Aussie to win the BMW Championship this week, the first name that might have popped into your mind would be Jason Day. Since Day had won at Conway Farms in 2015, in fact if you takes Days score at Conway Farms in 2013-2015 and 2017 according to NBC, Day is 50, yes 50 under par. That being said, Day did not win, fellow Aussie Marc Leishman did at 23 under par, smashing an under par tournament record set by Tiger Woods.

Justin Rose carded a 6 under par 65, to tie for second place with Rickie Fowler at 18 under par, only 5 shots behind Leishman. Day ended up in fourth place at 16 under par. Another shot back was Matt Kuchar and Jon Rahm  at 15 under par. Jordan Spieth was T-7.

The amazing things was all the low rounds players put up on the board that did not help them win, only one player road it into the Tour Champion in Atlanta next week. Kevin Na and Brooks Koepka the U.S. Open champion at Erin Hills both shot 63. Koepka who said he was sick all week, and only on Sunday had a normal amount of energy to play was already in Atlanta, and with his 63 cemented a top 10 finish headed to Atlanta.

Tony Finau and Zach Johnson each had 64. Finau advances to Atlanta moving up from 39 to 24th place, and Johnson who finished 48th in the points heads home.

Leishman said that the biggest improvement in his game this year has been his driving, and he gave credit to his new Callaway Epic Driver as the main reason why. Leishman also gives the International team another weapon in the Presidents Cup that’s coming up in just a couple of weeks against Team USA.

One interesting thought came from runner up Justin Rose, who said he is looking forward to the BMW Championship returning in 2019 to Medinah. Rose was part of the victorious Team Europe Ryder Cup win over Team USA. A day Rose called one of the best in his life on a golf course.

But come 2021 or 2023, Rose was looking for a return to where he won the BMW Championship six years ago, Cog Hill. One never knows.

Next years BMW Championship moves to the Philadelphia area at the Aronimink Golf Club, and will be played Sept. 4-9.
