Mara Janess won the Women’s Western Golf Association National Junior Champion at Aurora Country Club this past June.

THE HISTORY STARTED in 1914, just ahead of WWI.

This year the Aurora Country Club in Chicago’s western suburbs, added the latest chapter of it’s 107 year old history, when it hosted the Women’s Western Golf Associations (WWGA) National Junior Golf Championship.

Mara Janess of Barrington Illinois who has committed to the University of Michigan, won the championship.

So what is the next big chapter in the clubs history, remains to be seen. As the club heads into the winter season, new first year head golf professional Matt Gebhardt will meet with the  clubs board of directors to discuss what comes next in the golf operation and the golf course.

The golf course is a William Langford design. Langford who was a Chicago based architect, is a recent inductee (2019) to the Illinois Golf Hall of Fame. But Langford has a long list of top Chicago area clubs that he designed, between the years of 1910 and 1950. Langford is credited with designing 44 courses during his career.

The pins sits in the back left corner of the green on 18.

70 members started the club with Dr. H.A. Brennecke serving as the clubs first president.

The land for the club was acquired by buying the 120 acre Minard Farm, for $10,500 dollars.

But 40 more acres were leased from EL Louise Schoeberlein. Years later that land was purchased from Schoeberlein.

Due to railroad tracks on the southside of the golf course, the original course design was limited to 139 acres of the clubs 160.

The first of several clubhouses, was a stone farmhouse, there was also two buildings that were used to store course equipment. A swimming pool was added in 1924, and trap shooting was a sport at the club. But that was halted when the club annexed itself to the City of Aurora, to gain well needed fire protection.

The par 3, 14th hole.

FIRE IN THE HOUSE:

The first clubhouse burned down in 1941. But with the club having other issues, the new clubhouse did not open until 1950.

But then in 1964 there was a small first when the old trapshooting clubhouse went up in flames.

Then in 1968 the main clubhouse was almost completely destroyed by fire. But by 1971 the new clubhouse was open with a new pool complex and tennis courts.

The early 1980’s saw changes in the grassing of the fairways, that was changed quickly after some initial problems and flooding. By 1984 the interior of the clubhouse was decorated, and most of that plan remains today.

The club has had two amazing professionals who won numerous Illinois PGA Section awards. Felice Torza who collected two Illinois Open titles. Bob Ackerman, was a 3-time Illinois PGA section player of the year (1985-87-88), who won four IPGA major titles.

Aurora Country Club still plays very challenging, even though the back tees sit at only 6,785 yards. But for how much longer, as Aurora Country Club is starting to look to it’s future.

The Callaway Coronado v2 SL

SHOPPING TIME for the holidays is here.

Because this year with supply delays lingering in many industries, it’s better to order as soon as possible.

But for golfers who might have everything, one thing they can always use, are new shoes.

Because the spikes on the bottom of the shoes, are not the only parts that wear out.

The Callaway Coronado v2 SL comes with a Forged Foam midsole. So what that does is create a softness mixed with energy return. But more features include waterproof protection. A mesh liner that allows for heat management and breathability. An external CounterLok heel stabilizer. The shoe comes in the colors of Navy, or Black/Grey and with a suggested retail of $129.95.

The New Balance Fresh Foam PaceSL BOA.

THE NEW BALANCE Fresh Foam PaceSL BOA, brings a foam midsole, with a BOA Fit System, that creates an ultimate walking shoe.

This Fresh Foam midsole brings a soft cushioned walk. But adds stability and support under the foot and arch.

The three-part adjustable BOA system, allows golfers to create, a fit that supplies their needs, during the walk and during the swing.

But the stronger TX4 laces, are a dial-in by the choice of the golfer. The shoe is available in Grey/Orange and Black/Red, and comes with a suggested retail of $129.95.

The new Fox Run Golf Club clubhouse and maintenance center in Elk Grove.

THE WAIT IS ALMOST OVER.

Because in early December the new Fox Run Golf Club in Elk Grove, will welcome golfers into a new clubhouse.

But by the time golfers are bringing their clubs into the new clubhouse, the outdoor golf season will be over.

But golf season at Fox Run will not be over. Because the new clubhouse will be complete with three new Full Swing simulator bays. So golfers can bring their clubs to Fox Run all winter long. Which is something the new clubhouse will bring to Fox Run.

The main room-new bar and simulators at Fox Run.

The six slot machines will be part of the new clubhouse. But there will also be plenty of big screen televisions, located all around the clubhouse.

So you won’t miss any of the sports action, no matter what way you are looking.

The clubhouse is expected to be up and running in early December. So there should be time to hold a holiday gathering there, if your looking for a place to have one. But check with Fox Run first on availability.

The new bar is almost ready to welcome those who need a beverage. Fox Run General Manager Tom Klaas swings away in the simulators.

The golf course is currently closed due to bad weather, but is not closed for the season, and will reopen weather permitting. For more information visit FoxRunGolfLinks.com or call the golf course at (847)-228-3544. The course is located at 333 Plum Grove Road in Elk Grove.

Welcome to Settler’s Hill Golf Course in Batavia.

IF YOU ENJOY GOLFING at Settler’s Hill Golf Course in Batavia, the wait time until it’s reopening is quickly starting to fade away.

Because when winter passes away, the time line will be likely be about 90 days out from the grand reopening of Settlers Hill. As of now the hope is for opening day to be somewhere in July.

Architect Greg Martin and the construction teams like Wadsworth Golf, have been hard at work for over a year now. So what you will find when “The Hill” reopens is not just a good golf course. But one with elevation change unlike anything else the Chicago area has seen. Simply because elevation change like this simply doesn’t exist around the Chicago area. The par 5 16th hole, will have a elevated tee shot that’s similar to the famed 14th hole on the “The General” at Eagle Ridge in Galena.

The new par 3, 6th hole at Settlers Hill.

But before you reach the new 16th tee box, there will be plenty of other holes you should enjoy. Including two new holes, both par 3’s.

The first one is the sixth hole, that was cut out of the trees to the right of the old sixth tee box. Now the tee shot has some carry to a green cut back into the woods, and over the creek-bed.

The par 3 15th hole, come with a large, but hidden green.

The par 3, 15th hole has a hidden green. But the good news, is that it’s a big green, one of the largest on the golf course. Many of the birdies made here, will be long putts.

But while there are only two new holes, there are changes to all the others. Like the order in which they play. For example, the former first hole is now number 18. Former hole #2, is now in the lead-off position as the first hole.  The former first hole, is now the 18th, and the holes numbers change by one, around the golf course.

The par 4 11th hole, now gives golfers some 20 feet more down the left side of the fairway. The cart path is now more to the right. During a site visit in late September, this entire fairway was a dirt pile.

More changes to Settler’s Hill include the addition of a new driving range. Located off to the right side of the new first tee box.

In between the first tee and the range, will be the new clubhouse. But the golf course will open before the clubhouse does. The hope is for clubhouse construction to start in 2022, and be open in 2023.

The famous old barn at Settlers Hill that has served as the pro shop will be kept. But used for other functions. A short game practice area with four greens has been built, just off to the side of the main entrance. Junior golf programs will be operated from that area.

Golfers should enjoy the new elevated tee box of the par 5, 16th hole. Rory Spears-photographed, picture by Greg Martin.

The elevation change that hade been camouflaged in the past, has been cleaned out in several areas. Martin  says the land is the highest point in Kane County.

What golfers will notice, is that during a stretch of holes from 9 to 16, almost every hole sits higher than the last one.

So if you think your up high on the 11th tee box, looking down at the ninth fairway. Wait until you get to the 14th tee box, and your looking down on the 11th tee box.

The view from the new back tee box on the tenth hole.

Settler’s Hill renovation has been what some would say, a project with several moving parts.

But when the course opens next year, the movement by golfers will to be to come out to Settler’s Hill and play the course as soon as possible.

Stay clicked in for updates on the reopening of the golf course next summer, opening day is less than nine months away.

Rory Spears at the MIHA facility in Addison Illinois, hooked up to the MIHA training machine.

I didn’t know what to think, when I went to the Addison based miha bodytec facility earlier this week.

So was it just another golf training method ? But no it wasn’t. I came away surprised in not only what I saw, but what I experienced.

I worked with Sales/Marketing and training specialist Jacki Berardi. Berardi is a former NCAA Division I golfer at the University of Dayton. But I was later joined by MIHA company CEO Brian Dillman. Dillman previously worked in golf with Wilson Sports, before joining miha bodytec.

The MIHA training screen. Just set your levels and go!

Soon after arriving. I headed into the locker-room to change into the work out suit.

Workouts are conducted with a trainer and the suit does get wetted down. It’s worn in a tight manner to your body. So it does feel like you are getting dressed for a deep-sea dive.

But you won’t need any Scuba-tanks for air. Once all parts of the suits are attached, and you are buckled-in, you are then attached to the machine.

But then the funs starts. Because it’s one of the most amazing workouts you will ever experience. The stimulation I felt in my legs and my back, eased me right through the workout. I would not have had any issues playing golf later that afternoon. Or the next day. But it was what I needed to recover from the side effects of my Covid booster shot.

MIHA’s Jacki Berardi puts me through my paces during the 20-25 minute workout. Photo by Taryn Parker KemperSports.

Miha is electric stimulation that moves you forward in your body training. But while most people might think it’s for recovery from injury, MIHA is not.

The Miha program takes electric stimulation to a new level. Because it opens the process into a new frontier. With the MIHA process, you can put a week worth of workouts into less that 30 minutes. How is that for those of you with a tight time schedule.

Miha comes to America from Munich Germany, where it began in 2007. It was the creation of founding CEO Jurgen Decker.

The EMS MIHA equipment travels easily.

SO WHAT IS EMS:

Electro Muscle Stimulation (EMS) activates your body by mimicking signals from the brain. That would normally be sent to the muscles to contract, during exercise.

During the EMS work out. Your muscles don’t determine whether the signal is coming from your brain, or a Miha bodytec device. So while working through your session, impulses activate over 98% of the muscles in your major muscle groups. It gives an 85% contraction rate per-second, as compared to 1-2 contractions per second in just one muscle group. Something you would feel during traditional strength training. EMS training sessions are efficient and safe.

MIHA Man shows off the wet suit for training.

miha bodytec has the following goals.

OUR VISION: Starting in Germany, we want to establish EMS Personal Training globally. Making it a recognized, trend-setting form of exercise and therapy across the world. With this project we will help many people make a permanent and holistic behavior change-towards a more active lifestyle.

What golfers can expect from MIHA EMS training.

The Arlington Hts. Park District par 3 golf course, also known as Payton’s Hill, from the days the late Bears great Walter Payton would train on the hill. The pin-flags are in. Which means golf season is winding down, a disappointing time for Len and I.

IT’S Good to see that Southern Pines Country Club has finished it’s Kyle Franz renovation. I plan on digging through some of the video’s with Franz and owner Kelly Miller on the course renovation, and get the audio and some pictures posted. So stay clicked in for that.

IF YOUR LOOKING FOR A PLACE TO GO FOR THANKSGIVING, your options include. Cog Hill Golf and Country Club in Palos Park, McWethys Tavern at Mistwood Golf Club. But another option is Eagle Ridge Resort & Spa in Galena Illinois. All of the above are winners so I hear.
