Sandra Fullmer was named the Women’s Western Golf Association’s (WWGA) 2020 Woman of Distinction.
But due to the Covid-19 pandemic, she received her award at the 2021, WWGA Annual Meeting, held at Lake Shore Country Club. WWGA President CeCe Durbin first recapped the 2021 WWGA championship season, before making the introduction of Fullmer.
Fullmer traveled in from Southern California to receive the honor in person.
But Fullmer’s travels started in life much earlier than that. She grew up in Mexico City and started playing golf at age 15.
At 16, she traveled to America to play in the USGA Junior Girls Championship.
But while Fullmer did not win that title.
She went on to win many titles during her long and distinguished career. So beginning with the Mexican Amateur Title between the years of 1955-1960. But in 1959 she won both the Spanish and German Amateur championships.
Fullmer’s list of victories also includes four Chicago Women’s District Golf Championships 1964-1965-1966 and 1968. Three Northern Illinois Women’s Golf titles, Five Illinois State Senior Championships in 1988-1989-1990-1992 and 1993. Two WWGA Senior Championships.
The former 25 year WWGA board member also speaks three languages (Spanish and French). In 2003-2004 she was President of the WWGA Board of Directors.
Fullmer spoke to the full room of attendee’s in the banquet hall at Lake Shore Country Club. Fullmer told several great stories from her playing career. Plus the time spent with her late husband Paul Fullmer. Paul Fullmer served as Executive Director of the American Society of Golf Course Architects (ASGCA), for over 30 years.
2021 WWGA Tournament Recap:
Aurora Country Club hosted the 2021 WWGA Junior Girls Championship. Mara Janess of Barrington Illinois was the winner. She will play her college golf at the University of Michigan.
The 2021 WWGA Women’s National Amateur Championship played at Park Ridge Country Club was won Marissa Wenzler from Dayton Ohio. Wenzler is a member of the University of Kentucky Women’s golf team. But advanced to the Round of 32, in the match play of the USGA Women’s Amateur.
Prestwick Country Club in Frankfort Illinois, will host the 2022 Junior Championship June 20-24. But the WWGA Women’s Amateur, will be held at the Sunset Ridge Country Club, July 18-23 in Northfield Illinois. So for more details visit WWGA.org.
