AUSTIN GREASER WINS THE 120TH WESTERN AMATEUR AT EXMOOR

Austin Greaser wins the 120th Western Amateur at Exmoor Country Club.

IF AT FIRST YOU DON’T SUCEED then try-try again.

Because in 2021 Austin Greaser of Vandalia Ohio (Dayton area) got close to winning two big amateur events.

First it was a final four in the Western Amateur at The Glen View Club. Then it was a trip to the championship match at the U.S. Amateur at historic Oakmont.

But Greaser admits he put a lot of work into those events, to fall just short of winning. But this year he was ready, ready to break through and win. Which is what he did at the 120th Western Amateur at Exmoor Country Club in Highland Park, with a 1 UP win over Mateo Fernandez de Oliveira. But Greaser might not be done yet. Because he says his game is in a place where he can win the U.S. Amateur in two weeks.

The win at Exmoor did not come easy. Because Greaser had to survive a playoff to make the match play part of the tournament. But then he had two hard matches in the final four to actually win the title.

Greaser pulled together late in his semi-final match, a birdie-eagle-birdie finish to win 3 & 2 over William Mouw of Chino California. That solid finish helped Greaser believe he could win in the afternoon.

Mateo Fernandez de Oliveira from Argentina, and part of the University of Arkansas Razorback’s golf team.

But in spite of the confidence, the championship match did not come easy.

Greaser was quickly 2 DN after three holes to Fernandez de Oliveira of Argentina. Fernandez holed his bunker shot on the third hole to take a solid early lead.

But Greaser fought back to make things all-square after the 8th hole. But Fernandez won holes 9 and 10 with short birdie putts and seemed to be in command with a 2 Up lead. Then Fernandez started having issues finding the fairway with his driver.

“I played a lot of golf this week and my legs were feeling it” said Fernandez. “The hot weather didn’t help either.” Fernandez had to play 17 holes in his morning match against Texas Longhorn Travis Vick in a 2 & 1 win. Temperatures in the hot sun at Exmoor, reached 93 degrees in the afternoon.

But after matching fives in the par-5 11th hole, the only thing hotter than the temperature was Greaser’s putter. Trailing 2 DN, Greaser said he stuck to his game plan. A plan that allowed him to birdie holes 12-13-14 and 15, to go from 2 DN to 2 UP.

Austin Greaser tee’s off the 6th hole, during the Western Amateur championship match.

After the players halved the 16th hole, Greaser was two up with two holes to play. But Fernandez fought back hard. After Greaser drove it almost 20 yards past Fernandez in the 17th fairway, Fernandez responded with a 9-iron to 4 feet. To a back-right pin. Then Greaser almost missed the green, but left himself a 6 foot side hill-down hill putt for the win. But the putt lipped out, and Fernandez drained his birdie putt the players were off to the 18th hole.

Greaser drove it 18 yards past Fernandez again. But both players were in the 18th fairway. Then Fernandez stuck a wedge 15 feet right of the cup. Greaser with wedge in-hand from 90 yards, then stunned himself and the galley as his wedge sailed long. It took one hop and bounced over the green into the deep rough.

But with a front right pin placement, Greaser had room to work with. His chip shot hit some 20 feet short of the cup. But on the downhill sloped green it kept creeping down to four feet above the hole. Fernandez putting for birdie and to force a playoff, slid his putt just past the top of the hole. Greaser then rolled his four foot putt dead-center into the cup for the win.

CLICK HERE to HEAR the full interview with Western Amateur Champion Austin Greaser.

After the U.S. Amateur, Greaser will return to the University of North Carolina. Greaser holed his approach shot last September at Olympia Fields from 168 yards out on 18, to win the Illini Invitational. Both for himself and for his Tarheel team, who are looking forward to returning to Olympia Fields next month. Greaser expects to turn professional next June after his upcoming college season ends. But if he elects to try and make the Walker Cup team, his plans could change.

Next years 121st Western Amateur will be played at the North Shore Country Club in Glenview, located in Chicago’s northern suburbs.

         NOW OPEN for business.

AFTER 20 months Settlers Hill has reopened for business.

Golfers can now enjoy the renovation work doing by architect Greg Martin and the Wadsworth construction team.

Settlers Hill has made several changes during the renovation. The hole numbers are one-off from before. Such as the old #2, is now #1, and so forth around the golf course.

Architect Greg Martin tours media members around Settlers Hill in the summer of 2021.

Martin rebuilt two of the par-3 holes and moved them. But the par-5 17th hole, now number 16, had it’s tee boxes moved up on top of the main hill.

So the tee shot drops almost 100 feet from tee box to the fairway. It’s the highest elevation place in Kane County.

There are other improvements to Settlers Hill. The property now has a driving range, and a short game area.

But there will also be a new clubhouse, which won’t likely be open until next year. The old clubhouse won’t be torn down, but will be used for banquets, and junior golf activities.

Currently the golf course is still hiring if you want to work at a golf course. Learn more about Settlers Hill at Settlershill.com.

PERKINS WINS ILLINOIS OPEN-WGA-AM-IWGA JUNIOR GIRLS

WHITE EAGLE GOLF CLUB IN NAPERVILLE (L) host of this weeks 73rd Illinois Open and host of the 2023 Women’s Western Golf Association-Amateur. (R) Exmoor Country Club in Highland Park, hosts this weeks 120th WGA Western Amateur Championship.

THE 73RD ILLINOIS OPEN CHAMPION DAVID PERKINS (L) With the Low Amateur Marcus Smith (R) are your winners at the White Eagle Golf Club in Naperville Illinois.

David Perkins shot a 2 under par round of 70, to win the 73rd Illinois Open, with a three day score of 210 (-6), to defeat runner-up Varun Chopra by 1 shot. Marcus Smith was two shots back at 212-to win the Low Amateur Award. For Smith it was his first appearance in the Illinois Open.

Perkins first place check was $23,168 out of a purse of $120,292 dollars.

“It hasn’t really set in quite yet so I can’t remember a lot of the shots I hit which is rare for me,” said Perkins. “The mental aspect was the most key. The course was set super tough and played hard every day. So I was just keep myself in it knowing that if I kept missing in the right spots and hitting golf shots. I could come out on top in the end.”

Smith shot a final round of 71 (-1) and carded a 4 under par 212 to be the Low Amateur Award winner.

“I couldn’t be happier with the way I’ve played,” said Smith. “Granted it was a tough loss because I was right there. But at the end of the day, I played three rounds under par. So I’m excited this being straight round under par.”

But with the leaders on the 17th hole, the horn sounded with bad weather approaching. So the remaining few players on the golf course, had to sit through a 1-hour delay before finishing. But right out of the delay, Perkins chip shot on 17 to 4 feet for birdie, basically sealed the tournament.

Daniel Hudson (Chicago) set the White Eagle course record with a 7 under par 65. Hudson finished T-3. Roy Biancalana was the low IPGA professional finishing T-7, with a final round of 71, and finishing -2 for the championship.

43RD ILLINOIS WOMEN’S JUNIOR GIRLS CHAMPIONSHIP, was won by Allyson Duan of Buffalo Grove. Duan carded a 2 under par 70 to win the title at Hickory Point Golf Course.

THE 120th WESTERN AMATEUR fought through a 90 minute rain delay Wednesday afternoon. But once it cleared to resume play. It was 21-year old William Mouw of Chino, California who rose to the top of the leaderboard. Mouw is at 8 under par (136) after 36 holes. But Tommy Kuhl of Morton Illinois and a member of the University of Illinois men’s golf team is T-2. Kuhl is tied with 4 players-two shots behind Mouw.

The 1-over par cut (145) trimmed the field from 156 players to 54. But those players will play 36 holes on Thursday to determine the Low-16 players who will advance to the match play.

DePaul University Assistant Golf Coach Michael Schachner swings away on the 1st hole, during Round 1 of the Illinois Open.

Round 2 is in the books at the White Eagle Golf Club in Naperville Illinois.

David Perkins of East Peoria has a 1 shot lead heading into Wednesday’s final round.

Right behind Perkins is Varun Chopra and amateur Marcus Smith of Rockford.

Scores have not been low, as a result there are plenty of players within just five shots of the lead. Wednesday should be an exciting finishing round. The final round will go off both tee’s in order to finish earlier in the day. Both high heat and rain are expected in the afternoon.

THE WESTERN AMATUER is now underway at Exmoor Country Club, there is a18 more holes of stroke play before the field is cut from 156 players down to the low-44 and ties. Defending champion Michael Thorbjornsen had a rough start with a double bogey and a bogey on the second hole, before rebounding back into contention with an under par score..

THE ILLINOIS JUNIOR GIRLS championship is under way in downstate Forsyth Illinois at the Hickory Point Golf Course. Because of the overload of tournaments this week, the next recap on this event will be later in the week.

THE WHITE EAGLE GOLF CLUB in Naperville Illinois, home of the 2022 Illinois Open.

THE FIRST ROUND IS IN THE BOOKS AT THE 2022 ILLINOIS OPEN.

THREE PLAYERS are tied for lead at 2 under par.

Jimmy Morton, Drew Sheppard, and (a) Marcus Smith who is transferring to Howard University this fall.

Michael Schachner the assistant golf coach at DePaul University, had his score at the turn as low as 4 under par.

But after two consecutive drives that got pushed right on holes 1 and 2 (on the front nine) Schachner was back down to three under par. But eventually fell back to event par before his round was complete.

The 2022 Illinois Open, at White Eagle Golf Club.

But all in all, 54 players are within 5 shots of the lead with 36 holes to go.

Some of those names are familiar, and some might not be. Regardless, considering Round 1 conditions and course set-up plenty of the fields players played some pretty good golf.

IPGA Tournament Director Brad Slocum visited the media room early in the afternoon session. Slocum said the maintenance team had the greens rolling at over 13 on the Stimp-meter, that’s moving.

The start can be really tough if your not ready to go. Holes 1-4 on the front nine have water left or right. Homes left or right, OB left and right, which can have a player spending the rest of the round playing catch-up, if they add a few penalty shots early in day.

But what’s really amazing is the overall condition of the golf course. Because only a week ago, a small tornado went through the course taking out some 75 trees. But there was more damage to the scoreboard, a patio awning and some golf carts that were all destroyed. So serious credit the maintenance team for making things look like nothing happened, only 9 days later.

But in addition to the current leaders, several local IPGA professionals are within a few shots of the lead, including White Eagle GM and Director of Golf Curtis Malm. But also in contention is Bryce Emory who won the Illinois Open at White Eagle in 2020.

David Perkins of East Peoria talks about his opening round at the Illinois Open.

(A) Marcus Smith Smith of Rockford on his first round at the Illinois Open.

TOURNEY TIME!

This week there are two tournaments in the Chicago area, and warm out or not I’ll be at both of them.

First on the tee today, is the Illinois Open at the White Eagle Golf Club in Naperville.

Defending champion T-K Kelly is not in the field and playing on the Korn Ferry Tour, so the title is up for grabs. So maybe Bryce Emory who won the title at White Eagle in 2020, can for two in a row at the Arnold Palmer designed White Eagle Club.

University of Illinois men’s golf coach Mike Small will likely be in the hunt, along with Andy Mickelson the director of golf at Mistwood Golf Club in Romeoville. Mickelson is the reigning IPGA Section champion. White Eagle Director of Golf Curtis Malm will be ready to put forth a solid three days in front of his membership.

But is there an amateur who could jump up and take the title this year ? The winner will be crowned-likely in the high heat on Wednesday afternoon.

STARTING TUESDAY AT EXMOOR is the 120th Western Amateur Championship, defending champion Michael Thorbjornsen is back this year and looking for two Western Amateur titles in a row.

WHAT I DO LIKE is that both tournaments are doing some live streaming of play, and if you can’t make it out, do check out the broadcasts. So visit each tournaments website for details on how to watch.

TOURNAMENT 3 is at Cog Hill Golf & Country Club, it’s the PGA or America Junior Tournament. Great tournament, bad week to have it in the Chicago area. Augusta Woman’s Amateur Champion Anna Green is the defending champion on the girls side. But for the second time in a month, she has WD out of a tournament in Illinois. Because Green got an exemption into the AIG British Women’s Open. Last month she pulled out of the WWGA-Amateur at Sunset Ridge.

THIS PAST WEEK the star power in golf was at the LIV Series tournament. It was not in Detroit at the PGA Tour. But kudo’s to Tony Finau for back-to-back wins, Finau is as hot as anybody in golf right now.

I AM GETTING Sick of the cry-babies whining about the LIV series of golf. Seriously if you don’t like it, that’s fine. But quit going on social media and crying about it. If you need to whine that bad-go open a bottle of it.

LEN ZIEHM at Lenziehmongolf.com has posted a column about his recent stop at the French Lick Resort. In beautiful French Lick Indiana. The resort is hosting a new Epson Tour event for the ladies on the Pete Dye Golf Course. It’s the biggest purse on the tour and should be some exciting golf. French Lick is a great getaway for those who are looking to take a golf trip.

THERE IS NO UPDATE SO FAR on the reopening of Settlers Hill in Batavia. But it should not be far away. I’ll keep everyone updated when I hear more. Because once the course does open, I do expect that it will be crowded right away.

THIS WEEK is expected to be a hot one. So when your out playing do take some water with you and stay hydrated.

THE SUMMER is flying by quickly, and Golfers on Golf Radio is down to it’s final 3 shows. I hope you can join us live on Saturday mornings at 10 Am on WNDZ-AM 750 Chicago.
