Last week on Tuesday we said “Farewell to the King”, since then golfers have wondered if it’s the end of an era.

Well it is from the standpoint we won’t see Arnold Palmer hitting that first tee shot at the Masters. We won’t see him driving around in his cart at Bay Hill before the tournament in March. The days of the new commercials with him will stop. But the effect he had on people and how he lived his life doesn’t have to stop if people keep him and his ways in our minds and how we do things in life.

DSC04603 Arnold Palmer speaks DS

Arnold Palmer speaks in 2015 before the start of the Palmer Cup matches at Rich Harvest Farms.

First up, while it’s nice to have a Arnold Palmer drink in honor of him and his passing, Palmer would more likely appreciate it, if you would go play a round of golf in his honor.

That would really mean something to him. If you want to do it one step better, you could go book a play and stay at his famed Bay Hill Lodge in Orlando. That is once it dries out from the recent hurricane rains.

Put your tab on your Mastercard and go from there. Make sure you get something with that famed umbrella logo on it. Arnie would be glad you did. I’ll be out playing tomorrow in his honor, you should too where and when you can. While your out playing and on or off the course, don’t be afraid to try and carry yourself the way the King would have. It might get you somewhere in life.

Locally both the Hawthorn Woods Country Club and the White Eagle Country Club are Arnold Palmer design golf courses. They are both private, but don’t turn down any invite you might get to play those tracks. Both are enjoyable. If your looking to donate money somewhere in honor of Palmer, try the Arnold Palmer Children’s hospital in Orlando. Trust me it’s a great cause. Arnoldpalmerhospital.com or visit bayhill.com for that round of golf.

IN THIS MONTH of breast cancer awareness it was great to see a breast cancer survivor be awarded the 2016 Woman of Distinction Award by the Women’s Western Golf Association (WWGA). Northwestern Woman’s golf coach Emily Fletcher was given the award at a luncheon last week at the Indian Hill Club in Winetka.

SO MUCH FOR TIGER..Woods WD’d out of the Safeway Open he was supposed to play in this week, he will be WD’ing from the Turkish Open he was supposed to play in. He is hoping to play in his Hero tournament in December. At this point there is now a possibility that might not happen either. What’s the old saying..what til next year.

THE FALL GOLF SEASON is moving along faster than we want it to. One of the best times to play golf for a variety of reasons is the fall months. But before we know it the clock’s will back up the daylight hours will be short. There is probably a good chance we only some 35 days left before it becomes dome season here in the Chicago area.

So get out and enjoy while you can, I know I will. Go play, the King would like that, and then have an Arnold Palmer after the round, the King would like that as well. RS

The (WWGA) Woman’s Western Golf Association, has named Emily Fletcher the 2016 WWGA “Woman of Distinction” award winner. Flecther serves as the woman’s golf coach at Northwestern University in Evanston.

The award has been presented since 1994, when it was first presented to Patty Berg. Fletcher received her award on October 6th during a luncheon at the Indian Hill Club.

The award is given to a woman who shows or displays a quality of leadership, involvement and commitment to the game of golf on either the amateur or professional level. The honoree will also have won or competed in a WWGA championship or made a significant contribution to the organization of the game of golf.

Fletcher a native of Fort Eustis VA., started playing the game of golf at age 13. Fletcher played four years of college golf, first at Longwood University, and then two more seasons at Ferris State University in Michigan. Fletcher says she went to Ferris State because at the time they were the only school offering Professional Golf study as a major.

From there Fletcher landed on her feet in Arizona at the Desert Highlands Golf Club in Scottsdale. After both an internship at Desert Highlands and then the job of assistant professional there, Fletcher moved onto the Glenview Club in 1987 as instruction and golf operations. She still teaches there in the summer when away from the NU golf program.

L-R Cece Durbin, Emily Fletcher and WWGA President Kim Schriver at the Indian Hill Club.

Fletcher spent time working as the assistant director of Betsy King’s Wachovia Classic from 1996 into 2004.

Fletcher became the head coach of the Northwestern Woman’s Golf Team in May of 2008. Only two years later Fletcher was diagnosed with breast cancer. She went through months of of both radiation and chemotherapy before she beat cancer.

During her fight against cancer she never missed one of NU’s tournaments and only a few practices, her players never felt all the issues Fletcher was dealing with because Fletcher found a way to never appear as ill as she was at times.

Fletchers team won it’s first Big Ten Championship in 2013, and they have been winning championships ever since.

“I am still overwhelmed with the news of being recognized as the 2016 honoree,” said Fletcher. “My ties to the Glen View Club and the many members who are affiliated with the WWGA have made me aware of the tireless and significant work this organization continues to do on behalf of woman golfers. In my work of recruiting the best players to Northwestern, I attend both WWGA championships every year.”

Fletcher added, “looking back on the history of the other honoree’s is like looking at the history of a ‘who’s who’ of golf. It’s a tremendous honor to be associated with the likes of Patty Berg, Louise Suggs, Nancy Lopez, Peggy Kirk Bell and Kathy Whitworth. I am not sure how i got lumped in with these legends. I will continue to live up to the standard they have set in promoting golf and developing a passion for the game.”

WWGA President Kim Schriver added, ” As a parent and Director of the WWGA who has seen junior golf grow and provide young women an opportunity to compete in college, Emily is the coach I would trust to mentor my daughters on and off the golf course. She exemplifies the values, discipline and character that will grow the game and positively influence young women.”

In the last 45 years, the Woman’s Western Golf Foundation has granted over $3.5 million dollars of scholarships to more than 675 scholars from 45 states and over two dozen women’s college golf programs.

The WWGA has no paid staff and Directors and Trustee’s are volunteers who pay their own expenses. They run two championships a year, their national amateur championship and a junior championship. For more information on both championships in 2017 visit WWGA.org.

The wait is over, after 8 years Team USA has won the Ryder Cup by a score of 17-11 over Team Europe. The 12 matches on Sunday swung back and forth, before the USA took control and ran away to grab the trophy. The final member of team Ryan Moore named as the last captains pick and winner of the John Deere Classic, won the final point needed to win the cup.

What a final day it was, it played out like Medinah to a point with Team USA taking the early lead at one point, then Team Euopre sized control and had the lead. At one point Europe lead in 6 of 7 matches and it looked like Medinah all over again was in the works.

Then Patrick Reed dug in during his match against Rory McIlroy that was the first match out, Reed set the tone by pulling A/S and then took a 1 UP lead, a lead he never relinquished. Then Jordan Spieth lost to Henrik Stenson, and JB Holmes got beat by Thomas Pieters and things started to tighten up.

The USA then got a key and surprising win out of Rickie Fowler over Justin Rose then started to turn the tide. Phil Mickelson had to fight hard, but won a half point with Sergio Garcia. From their the board started to red instead of blue the rest of the way. That allowed the USA to open up the lead and end up winning by the six points they did.

Ryan Moore’s opportunity to clinch the cup came because Brandt Snedeker won his match only a few minutes before Moore won his. Regardless Moore was thrilled that he got the honor to get that winning point. All of the other matches except for Matt Kuchar’s match that he lost wrapped up fairly quickly after the cup was won.

Zach Johnson won his match 4&3 over Matt Fitzpatrick in the anchor match right after Moore clinched the final point. Fitzpatrick the former U.S. amateur champion who spent a quick semester at Northwestern, played in only two matches and never mounted much of a charge in either one. He’s likely he will be better the next time around.

Pieters who played at Illinois, set a new European rookie point record for a positive start to his Ryder Cup career.

For the U.S.A., for the first time since Arnold Palmer captained the USA team in 1975, all american players won at least one match, and that feat was accomplished by Saturday.

So the Ryder Cup stays here for at least two years, until it is contested in Paris France in 2018 at Le Golf National. The course was created with the Ryder Cup in mind and can hold very large galleries. Which will be needed as this event continues to grow.

WITH TWO DAYS in the Books at the 41st Ryder Cup. It’s TEAM USA 9 1/2 and TEAM EUROPE 6 1/2.

Will Sunday mark the first day of the USA holding the cup, or will it be a remake of the “Meltdown at Medinah.”

Saturday was quite a day at Hazeltine National Golf Club. It started with the USA holding a two point lead over Europe. By the time the morning Foursome matches were played it was down to only 1 point. The final bit of bad karma, saw top USA team of Patrick Reed and Jordan Spieth losing a 4 UP lead with the 6 holes to play to Henrik Stenson and Justin Rose, the match ended A/S. Call it 6 1/2 to 5 1/2.

Early in the afternoon, Rory McIlroy and former Illini Golfer Thomas Pieters won their match over Brooks Koepka and Dustin Johnson 3&2 to tie things up at 6 1/2 all. then for short moment Europe had the lead, but that didn’t last.

The USA rallied in the last three matches to win them all and get the three point lead headed into Sunday. Matt Kuchar following the round says that Team USA will focus on the day and their match, not on what happened at Medinah 4 years ago.

To regain the lead Phil Mickelson and Kuchar took turns playing great golf, Kuchar at the start and “Lefty” on the backside to defeat Martin Kaymer and Sergio Garcia. 2&1.

Then the the surprise of the afternoon. After being A/S or behind for the first 16 holes, Ryan Moore and JB Holmes rallied to take a 1UP lead over Lee Westwood and Danny Willett. On 18 as both USA golfers missed the fairway, Westwood and Willett did not, they also found the green. Holmes and Moore had to settle for pars, and after Willett missed a putt to halve the match from just outside 10 feet, Westwood who had a shot to less than three feet, pushed his putt for the miss and the USA to get a full point.

With Jordan Spieth struggling, Patrick Reed played outstanding golf and helped the USA get the final point of the day 3&2 over Rose and Stenson.

Click here to hear interviews with the American Team and Captain Davis Love III after the afternoon session, and Team Europe Captain Darren Clarke.

The Sunday’s Singles matches start at 11:04 with Rory McIlroy playing Patrick Reed in the first match and nine minutes later it’s Stenson and Spieth. the final match just after 1 PM, is Matt Fitzpatrick vs Zach Johnson.

Sunday is Red-Out day for fans of Team USA, so wear Red and support Team USA.

(Reporting from Hazeltine National Golf Club, Chaska Minnesota.)

DAY 1 Team USA 5-Team Europe 3.

It was quite a start for team USA, and during the Ryder Cup of recent years, Foursomes have not been the teams strongest suit. That changed today when the USA swept Europe 4-0 in the morning matches.

Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed were first out and set the tone with a birdie on the 1st hole. They never looked back in a 3&2 win over Olympic medal winners Henrik Stenson and Justin Rose. The anchor match saw Dustin Johnson and Matt Kuchar crush Lee Westwood and Thomas Pieters 5&4, a match that was over early.

dsc07463-1st-hole-area-ds-2

The first hole area has been buzzing for a few days.

The middle matches looked to be European points most of the day, but Phil Mickelson and Rickie Fowler who were 1 DN after 15, won holes 16 and 17 for a 1 UP win over Rory McIlroy and Andy Sullivan.

Then like on cue, Zach Johnson and Jimmy Walker won four straight holes on the back nine for a 4&2 win over Martin Kaymer and Sergio Garcia. the late flips on two matches and a 4-0 sweep had the Hazeltine pro-american crowd buzzing.

“We expected it to be a good morning, but maybe not this good,” said Mickelson. Who added Team USA felt it could win the morning session. If only they could have kept it going. If the USA had an afternoon like the morning went, the Ryder Cup could have been back in USA hands by late on Saturday. It wasn’t to be.

Europe started the afternoon like it started the morning in the Fourball matches. With Reed making a quick birdie on the 1st, and putting team USA 1 UP. But by the 7th hole the match had flipped and Stenson and Rose had revenge with a 3&2 win and Europe had it’s first point.

The USA then regained it’s four-point lead when Brendt Snedeker and Brooks Koepka rolled to a 5&4 win over Martin Kaymer and Danny Willett. Willett the Masters Champion took some heat from the American galleries, still upset over negative comments made this week by Willett’s brother about american golf fans.

The Europe won the last two matches when Garcia and Rafa Cabrera-Bello won 3&2 over J.B. Holmes and Ryan Moore, who were both playing their first match of the day.

Then McIlroy rolled in a big putt he said later he knew was going in before he hit it, and celebrated with fist pump and bow to the gallery after he and partner Thomas Pieters defeated Johnson and Kuchar 3&2.

There are some interesting changes for the Saturday morning Foursome matches. Matt Fitzpatrick who spent a short time at Northwestern University will get his first action of the matches for team Europe.

Both captains Europe’s Darren Clarke and Team USA’s Davis Love III, felt very positive about their teams after Day 1.

Click here to hear interviews with Brandt Snedeker, Brooks Koepka, Rory McIlroy, Thomas Pieters, Darren Clarke and Davis Love III.

The 41st Ryder Cup is finally ready to tee off starting at 7:35 CST from the Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska Minnesota.

On Thursday the opening ceremonies were held and both teams got their final practices in.

The weather was better today and sun was out most of the day, so teams were able to practice without so much cold weather gear on.

The galleries were extremely large and it was a sign of how many people are expected to be in attendance. The Captains Davis Love III of Team USA and Darren Clarke both held their final press conferences after the opening ceremonies.

In what Team USA hopes is not a sign of things to come, the 9-hole matches between former team captains of both sides, was a sweep for the European’s by a score of 8-0.

At the end of the opening ceremonies, both captains revealed the four teams they will send out starting at 7:35 Friday morning in the foursome matches, or alternate shot style matches.

Match 1. USA Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed vs EUROPE Henrik Stenson and Justin Rose.

Match 2. USA Phil Mickelson and Rickie Fowler vs EUROPE Rory McIlroy and Andy Sullivan.

Match 3. USA Jimmy Walker and Zach Johnson vs EUROPE Sergio Garcia and Martin Kaymer.

Math 4. USA Dustin Johnson and Matt Kuchar vs Lee Westwood and Thomas Pieters.

Both captains were non-committal on afternoon pairings, and said they would see how the morning went first, but even Love III didn’t say much on that issue either.

The second match starts at 7:50 Am, Match 3 at 8:05 Am, Match 4 at 8:20 Am. The USA needs 14 1/2 points to take back the cup and Europe needs only 14 points to retain the cup.

Click here to hear Team USA Captain Davis Love III press conference along with a few comments from team Europe Captain Darren Clarke.

Comment for Darren Clarke..”Putting our Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson first is because they are a proven Ryder Cup pairing. Both are string players. I am happy with how the first pairings and matches have come out. I am pleased to have them leading off.”

Weather for Friday, sunny all day and temperature high of 71 degrees.

The 41st Ryder Cup is here, and the Hazeltine National Golf Club is buzzing with fans and it’s only Wednesday.

The galleries will be huge and the emotion in the air. Team USA Captain and Phil Mickelson have already said the sqaud will be playing with heavy hearts after the passing of the “King” Arnold Palmer.

Flags outside the clubhouse are at half staff in Palmer’s memory.

For Team USA, Hazeltine is the coming out party of it’s new game plan to win the back the Ryder Cup, that it has not won since 2008 at Valhalla. For the European’s they are looking for their 4th straight win int he Ryder Cup, but Captain Darren Clarke has six rookies on his team and veteran Henrik Stenson the “Open Champion” is playing on a sore knee that will require surgery in the days ahead.

John Deere Classic Champion Ryan Moore was the late addition to Team USA after a second place finish at East Lake in the PGA Tour Championship, that was won by Rory McIlroy who says he is ready for this week and excited about his game.

All three of the medalists at the RIO Olympic Games are here as well. Justin Rose who won the Gold Medal, Stenson with the Silver Medal and Team USA’s Matt Kuchar who won the Bronze.

Mickelson was one of the many players who spoke today, but really captured the house with his comments about the Team USA plan to win, saying the USA can win and for his comments about the great fans in Minnesota and thoughts on Arnold Palmer.

What else is making news. Danny Willett the Masters Champion has had to deal with questions about comments made by his brother that ripped american’s and the american golf fans. Willett had to be confronted on the golf course by Captain Darren Clarke about his brothers comments.

Willett released a statement and thanked american’s who have really supported him since he won the “green jacket”. Willett said he spoke with his brother as well and then USA Captain Davis Love III, who accepted Willett’s explanation.

Not much news on pairings yet, but more to come right here at Golfersongolf.com so stay clicked in. I’m covering the championship all week long. RS

DSC04603 Arnold Palmer speaks DS

Arnold Palmer speaks before the Palmer Cup at Rich Harvest Farms in June of 2015.

Jerry Rich owner of Rich Harvest Farms on Palmer’s passing.

“This is a real loss for golf, he was an icon and a very special person. I will remember him telling all the players before the Palmer Cup, that when they turn professional and are making a lot of money, to remember their roots, the towns where they came from, where they learned game and to give back.”

BY RORY SPEARS…

Arnold Palmer was a special person, not only a golf icon, but special person off of it as well. There are plenty of people today who know how to act and what to say, because that how Arnie would have done it. You take your hat off inside of a building, men hold the door open for lady, it’s simple stuff like manners that’s all.

There are plenty of sports figures, athletes, and folks in the public eye who have made millions in the world of corporate endorsements, well they can thank Arnold Palmer who made a living at it long before anyone else did.

These days it’s not uncommon to go into your favorite golf club or watering hole and order an Arnold Palmer, who ever thought that a mix or Lemonade and Iced Tea would become such a popular drink, well it did and maybe because it’s known as an Arnold Palmer.

Palmer wasn’t dealing with the heat well over the last week or two, so he was taken into the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (The UPMC). It’s not clear yet what the doctors there discovered, but Palmer was due for a heart operation on Monday.

I had the privilege of meeting and talking with Palmer on several occasions and I will never forget them.

One year in the early 90’s Palmer golfed with Michael Jordan at Stonebridge Country Club in Aurora during the Ameritech Senior Open. Around 18,000 people showed up for a pro-am, that alone is amazing.

After the round both Palmer and Jordan had press conferences, when Palmer was done Jordan started his, long time Chicago reporter Jerry Kuc and I sat with Palmer as Jordan talked about the day. I’ll never forget Kuc asking Palmer if Jordan had a chance to be a pro golfer one day, Palmer smiled and shook his no. We knew right then MJ had better stick to hoops.

During the 1997 Sr. Open at Olympia Fields, Palmer upset with his putting during Round 3, came over to a small putting green on the backside of the Olympia Fields clubhouse. Kuc again was the first to notice him and stopped to watch, soon came your’s truly and then others, and more and more. The green was surrounded, 1-deep then 2-deep, then 3-deep. Arnie’s Army around the putting green was bigger than the gallery following the leader, it’s stuff like that you don’t forget.

I remember interviewing Palmer at Kemper Lakes in 1989 at the PGA, 1988 at the Sr. Open at Medinah. You don’t forget those moments. I do remember a 1997 U.S. Sr. Open hat I had Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer autograph, it raised a lot of money at a golf outing for Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago.

You could’t help feel in awe when you were around The King, on the course even in his later years there was still “the army.”

As I head to Hazeltine for the Ryder Cup this week, I can only imagine the atmosphere that will be there. Win one for the King, well at least it should be. Let’s hope they do.
