The wait is over, after 8 years Team USA has won the Ryder Cup by a score of 17-11 over Team Europe. The 12 matches on Sunday swung back and forth, before the USA took control and ran away to grab the trophy. The final member of team Ryan Moore named as the last captains pick and winner of the John Deere Classic, won the final point needed to win the cup.

What a final day it was, it played out like Medinah to a point with Team USA taking the early lead at one point, then Team Euopre sized control and had the lead. At one point Europe lead in 6 of 7 matches and it looked like Medinah all over again was in the works.

Then Patrick Reed dug in during his match against Rory McIlroy that was the first match out, Reed set the tone by pulling A/S and then took a 1 UP lead, a lead he never relinquished. Then Jordan Spieth lost to Henrik Stenson, and JB Holmes got beat by Thomas Pieters and things started to tighten up.

The USA then got a key and surprising win out of Rickie Fowler over Justin Rose then started to turn the tide. Phil Mickelson had to fight hard, but won a half point with Sergio Garcia. From their the board started to red instead of blue the rest of the way. That allowed the USA to open up the lead and end up winning by the six points they did.

Ryan Moore’s opportunity to clinch the cup came because Brandt Snedeker won his match only a few minutes before Moore won his. Regardless Moore was thrilled that he got the honor to get that winning point. All of the other matches except for Matt Kuchar’s match that he lost wrapped up fairly quickly after the cup was won.

Zach Johnson won his match 4&3 over Matt Fitzpatrick in the anchor match right after Moore clinched the final point. Fitzpatrick the former U.S. amateur champion who spent a quick semester at Northwestern, played in only two matches and never mounted much of a charge in either one. He’s likely he will be better the next time around.

Pieters who played at Illinois, set a new European rookie point record for a positive start to his Ryder Cup career.

For the U.S.A., for the first time since Arnold Palmer captained the USA team in 1975, all american players won at least one match, and that feat was accomplished by Saturday.

So the Ryder Cup stays here for at least two years, until it is contested in Paris France in 2018 at Le Golf National. The course was created with the Ryder Cup in mind and can hold very large galleries. Which will be needed as this event continues to grow.
