THE 2021 BMW CHAMPIONSHIP raised a record windfall for the Evans Scholars and the Western Golf Association (WGA).

Because this past August at Caves Valley Golf Club, the 2021 BMW Championship put $5.6 million dollars into the scholarship fund for the Evans Scholars Foundation.

Making the overall total amount raised over $40 million dollars, since BMW came on-board as title sponsor.

Because of support from BMW, the Caves Valley Golf Club Foundation, the local corporate community, and the over 100,000 spectators that turned out in person for the championship. The 2021 BMW Championship broke the previous fundraising record $1.2 million, set in 2019 at Medinah Country Club.

WGA Sr. VP of Tournaments Vince Pellegrino speaks at media day for the 2021 BMW Championship at Caves Valley.

“We’re proud to announce the contribution of all proceeds from the BMW Championship to the Evans Scholars Foundation. Because they will be used to send hardworking youth caddies to college,” said Vince Pellegrino, WGA senior vice president of tournaments. “Because of the generosity of our partners at BMW, Caves Valley and the PGA TOUR and the incredible enthusiasm of the Baltimore-area fans, this was truly a special year for our championship.”

The J.K. Wadley trophy (L) and the BMW Championship trophy (R).

Patrick Cantlay won the first TOUR event hosted in the Baltimore area in almost 60 years. But Cantlay’s dramatic win took a six-hole playoff with Bryson DeChambeau.

Currently, the number of caddies enrolled at various colleges and universities sits at 1,070.

BMW has recently signed on to host the 2023-2027 championships. With the 2023 BMW Championship to be played at the Olympia Fields Country Club in the south suburbs of Chicago. But for more details on the 2022 championship at Wilmington Country Club in Delaware, see BMWChampionship.com.

GOLF JUST KEEPS GETTING BETTER AND GOLF SEASON IS EVOLVING INTO A YEAR ROUND BUSINESS IN THE CHICAGO AREA.

Bridges of Popular Creek Director of Golf Brian Bechtold, welcomes golfers to the new practice facility at the club.

THE BRIDGES OF POPLAR CREEK in Hoffman Estates has opened it’s new practice facility.

This state of the art facility will have golfers who want to hit outside, coming to the course on most days of the year.

Currently the new $750,000 facility is going through a soft opening. But the formal opening will be in March of 2022, says Director of Golf, Brian Bechtold.

The new 10 bay practice facility with Toptracer at the Bridges of Poplar Creek in Hoffman Estates.

Bechtold says the club took out some current hitting places, and replaced it with this facility.

But the new facility is more than just golf. Because behind the hitting bays, and the building are areas to relax and enjoy some food and beverages.

One of the winter projects, is getting the facility ready for golf lessons or clubs fittings.

The outdoor dining area and firepits add yet another dimension to the new facility.

Because of a second row of heaters hanging from the ceiling, one over the hitting bays and one over the dining area. So golfers will be kept warm on colder days.

With Toptracer in all ten of the hitting bays, golfers can check their stats, or play rounds of golf on great courses from around the world. So if your ready for a match with your friends, you can do that as well.

The sitting area behind the 10 hitting bays.

Bechtold calls the practice facility part of the Bridges of Poplar Creek, long term master plan.

The club has worked with the golf architecture firm of Bob Lohman and Todd Quitno in the past, and will continue to do so moving forward.

More course improvements will be done to the golf course. But those plans aren’t ready to be announced.

AS THE WEEK BEGINS there is good news coming from the Quad Cities.

The John Deere Classic has announced this morning, another outstanding year of raising money.

Because the JDC’s Birdies for Charity arm of the classic, has raised over $12 million dollars in revenue in 2021.

The amount shows an increase of over $350,000 from 2020, when there was no championship. But this year there was a classic/with restrictions.

The John Deere Classic will be handing out checks to over 470 charities in the Quad Cities area. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from John Deere. One lucky couple was just one birdie off, from the total amount of birdies made this year, Classic week. They were awarded a free two-year lease on a new Lexus. 2021 was the third highest amount ever raised by the JDC. The Quad Cities, small towns. But a big heart = real help. Well done JDC.

COVID-There is a new strain out. It is starting to affect both the NBA and the NHL. So will it start to affect golf tournaments going forward. Let’s hope not. But most golfers on the major tours seemed to be vaccinated. But spectators may not be. So might there need to vaccination checks to get into tournaments, I hope not. We will see.

THE OMAR URESTI RULE is going into effect via the PGA of America. Club professionals seem to be celebrating after watching Uresti clean-up at various championships. But as you might guess, Uresti is not happy. Because he did nothing illegal. He did follow the rules. But club pro’s don’t like former PGA Tour players, who had a long run on PGA Tour, falling back into their ranks to compete. Stay tuned to see what happens next here.

I HAVE NOW TRIED the new Cog Hill Range Picker Pale Ale-I enjoyed it. Pick up a four pack to go at Cog Hill. ON THE JEMSEK GOLF FRONT-the new Patio at Pine Meadow in Mundelein is open. Enjoy a beverage on the patio-maybe this Wednesday when the temps get close to 70. So the weather folks say, we will see.

THE ZIEHM & SPEARS PODCAST SERIES will return this week. So stay tuned for the posting of our next edition.

I DID VISIT THE GOLF SHACK in Glenview. owner Nick Larkin’s new venture is pretty good. Located just off Waukegan road on Chestnut, the Shack is pretty good. So book a simulator and enjoy the food, have a beverage.

THE LONG WAIT TO OPEN the new Fox Run Clubhouse should be over this Friday. Final sign-off for occupation by the EGFD should happen in the next day or so. Stay clicked in for more details on opening day.

SO WHAT DO YOU DO when you sell your business and the family asks-what’s next ?

For Nick Larkin who has almost 20 years in the restaurant business, it meant taking that experience and mixing it with his love of golf.

But with the golf movement becoming more of a year round business up in northern states, Larkin launched “The Shack”.

So what is “The Shack” ? It’s a combination of four golf simulators, and a bar-restaurant area with some really good food. But for Chicago area golfers that know the area, The Shack is located in Glenview halfway between the Glen Club and North Shore Country Club.

NICK LARKIN is the owner of The Shack in Glenview.

But while “The Shack” is new, opening only back in late September on Ryder Cup weekend, it’s caught the eye of area golfers.

Larkin says his business is getting busier all the time, as area courses are closing for the winter and outdoor play.

While many of the area courses have only 1 or 2 simulators, Larkin’s Shack has four simulators.

One of the four simulators at The Shack.

Golfers can book the simulator time on line, or call The Shack, and Larkin or one of his staff members will pencil in you or your group into your time slot.

If you wish to eat before, during or after golf, no problem. But even better news is that The Golf Channel can always be found on one of the Shacks televisions.

The menu and food are good. But Larkin says much of it could be found at some clubs halfway houses. But the ‘Shack’ is becoming a place where golfers are hanging out, and enjoying time with other golfers. Larkin says he enjoys meeting his customers and getting to know them, like members getting to know their local pro.

The Shack’s bar and dining area.

The golfers who come to golf, have plenty of golf options on the simulators.

Because there are over 100 courses to pick from around the world. But their are other games and options to choose from.

If you just want to check how straight your drives are, you can. But another option is to see how far your are hitting it. So if you don’t like those distance numbers, both lessons and club fittings are options at the Shack.

CLICK HERE TO HEAR the interview with Nick Larkin owner of “The Shack”.

The Shack is located at 1717 Chestnut in Glenview. Website TheShackGolfClub.com or call (847)-904-2905. Hours are 10 AM daily to 11 PM Sunday-Thursday. Friday and Saturday open until Midnight.

See More photo’s of ‘The Shack’ on Facebook-Rory Spears page, or Twitter at @GogBlogGuy.

CLEVELAND GOLF ANNOUNCES CBX ZIPCORE WEDGES

The new Cleveland CBX ZipCore Wedges starting in America December 17th.

CLEVELAND IS COME NEXT WEEK.

CLEVELAND GOLF’S NEW CBX ZipCore Wedges.

So if you looking for what’s next in the line of CBX Cleveland Wedges, it’s about to arrive. Just 1 week before Christmas.

Cleveland Golf is calling the new ZipCore Wedges the latest ember of the popular CBX line.

“If you play cavity back irons you should be playing a CBX wedge, plain and simple,” said Jeff Brunski, Vice President of Research and Development at Cleveland Golf. “Because the sole is more forgiving, the face is more forgiving, and the club is a lot easier to swing.”

The new foundation of the CBX ZipCore is a low-density core that sits at the heart of the wedge. ZipCore shifts the center of gravity, while it boosts a High-Low MOI for additional stability both high and low on the face of the club. So this generates a 26% improvement in the High-Low MOI compared to the previous generation of wedges. Cleveland says there is also a 10% improvement in Hell-Toe MOI.

ZipCore comes with a hollow chamber near the heel, with additional weight in the top to maximize MOI and perimeter weighting. This allows for new levels of unprecedented short game forgiveness. A Gelback TPU insert helps dampen vibrations to provide a pure feel at the moment of impact.

Register today for the Mistwood Golf Short Game clinic with IPGA professional Chris Ioriatti Dec. 15th. Mistwoodgolfdome.com or call (630)-739-7600. Bring your wedges.

The new ZipCore CBX wedges do feature the UltiZip Grooves. But these new UltiZip have been improved over past editions by 11% in sharpness, and 7.3% deeper. The grooves sit 7.4% closer on the club face, which allowed Cleveland to add two more grooves on the face. So this allows for more groove contact on each shot, and more spin.

ZipCore CBX has three Sole Grinds. So you can pick the loft and let the grinds take care of themselves. But there is now a purpose-built 44 degree wedge, designed to excel over set-matching pitching wedges.

“We’ve included all the same technology and spin performance that we offer our Tour staff and put it into the CBX ZipCore,” said Brunski. “So it’s no wonder the entire line of CBX wedges has been so successful-it’s Tour technology built into a edge for real golfers.”

Pricing is $149.99 steel shafts or $159.99 for graphite. But for a full list of sole-grinds and lofts, see Clevelandgolf.com.

ARCHITECT GREG MARTIN’S WINTER REPORT-KEEPING BUSY

Architect Greg Martin at Settlers Hill in Batavia.

ARCHITECT GREG MARTIN has been one the Chicago area’s most active golf architects in recent years.

But now Martin is getting even busier, like so many architects across the country.

Because with the pandemic driving thousands of golfers back to golf-or to the golf courses looking for something to do.

Golf has been busy during the last 20 months, which has improved the bottom line at many facilities. So this has allowed more clubs to get serious about improving their clubs on and off the golf course.

The new par 3, 6th hole at Settlers Hill in Batavia

One of Martin’s biggest current area projects is Settlers Hill in Batavia.

Somewhere in July of 2022, anxious golfers will get to start enjoying this Martin renovated project. The elevation changes at Settlers Hill are something Chicago area golfers are not used to seeing. But something they will enjoy once they get out on the golf course. The new clubhouse will open at a later date.

River Forest Country Club in Elmhurst.

THE RIVER FOREST COUNTRY CLUB has had Martin improving their short game practice areas.

In addition the fall project also included work on the courses tee boxes. This project not only offered new yardage options, but allowed for better maintenance practices.

Previously Martin had done a bunker project with River Forest, that was well received by the membership.

AFTER SUCESSFULLY HOSTING the 2021 Women’s Western Golf Association (WWGA) Amateur this past July, the Park Ridge Country Club brought Martin back to improve practice facilities. Prior to the championship Martin worked with the club on a course renovation that focused on the bunkers and sightlines.

The latest project at Park Ridge includes improvements to the practice area’s. Where three new practice bunkers were added, and a expanded chipping area.

IN NAPERVILLE MARTIN WILL BE hard at work for the next couple of years, at both Springbrook and Naperbrook both Naperville Park District courses. Springbrook will see it’s share of work in the fall of 2022. This project includes work on bunkers, tee’s, ponds and more. During fall of this year, Naperbrook saw improvements to it’s practice area’s.

The 18th Hole at Glen Erin Golf Club in Janesville Wisconsin.

NORTH OF THE BORDER.

Martin is back at work in Wisconsin.

First on the tee is a former Martin project in Janesville, the Glen Erin Golf Club.

The club that first opened in 2003, will be redoing the bunkers, and removing trees. But there will also be repairs, and realignments done on the cart paths.

IN COTTAGE GROVE near Madison, The Oaks Golf Course work will finally get underway in 2022, after being delayed by the pandemic.

MARTIN HAS ANNOUNCED that master planning work for Phillips Park Golf Course in Aurora is underway. But there is no time-table for construction to begin. The project will bring improvements to the golf course over the next decade.

THREE GREENS and surrounding bunkers with drainage issues at Fox Ben Golf Club in Oswego, will see much needed improvement in the short future.

If your course could use some improvements. Maybe ready to master plan for the years ahead, contact Greg Martin at Martindesigngolf.com
