WWGA President Susan Buchanan (with trophy) and 2022 Woman of Distinction Judy Rankin (R)

The Women’s Western Golf Association (WWGA) recently award longtime LPGA Golfer and Broadcaster Judy Rankin with the 2022 Woman of Distinction Award.

The award was presented at the Glen View Club, on the day of the annual meeting.

Rankin recently announced a retirement from the broadcast booth, even though she might occasionally contribute from her home in Texas.

Rankin started playing golf at age 6, when her father introduced her to the game. When she was only 17, she joined the LPGA Tour and won her first event in the 1968 season.

Rankin went on to win 26 LPGA Tour events, and was LPGA player of the year twice. After retiring from active golf, she became the first female broadcaster to cover the PGA Tour from inside the ropes. But after years with ABC Sports/ESPN, she joined the Golf Channel in 2010.

Rankin played in numerous WWGA Tournaments, including the Women’s Western Open. She won the 1976 Colgate Dinah Shore,

WILLOW HILL READIES TO OPEN THE LARGEST CHICAGO GOLF DOME

THE NEW STONEDRIFT SPA at Eagle Ridge Resort & Spa in Galena is now open. So check out the list of new services, and facilities at EagleRidge.com #Sauna #massage.

THE GOG BLOG by RORY SPEARS, Director of Content and Creation for Golfers on Golf. Follow Rory on Twitter @GogBlogGuy or connect on LinkedIn and Facebook.

Willow Hill Golf Dome owner Kent Knebelkamp stands inside the new dome, expected to open soon.

WILLOW HILL Golf Course in Northbrook is continuing to evolve under owner Kent Knebelkamp.

Because there is now more than just a golf course at Willow Hill.

Dirt piles are moving around, and that big white shell that has been inflated, is now ready to be the Chicago area’s largest golf dome. Maybe ever.

From some research done by Golfers on Golf, what Knebelkamp the former University of Illinois football and baseball player is offering area golfers, is length.

Length that they haven’t had before while hitting in a dome. Golfers on Golf radio show founder Mike Munro who also brought the concept of golf domes to the Chicago area, when he created the White Pines Golf Dome in Bensenville, said the White Pines Dome was just over 100 yards long.

The Willow Hill Golf Dome is getting ready to open.

The Mistwood Golf Dome located in Bolingbrook, is just less than 100 yards long.

Yardage at the Buffalo Grove Golf Dome ranges in between the yardage in the dome at Mistwood and the former White Pines Dome.

There are other domes, but what Knebelkamp is bringing to Willow Hill is a 160 yard long-golf dome. That likely is the largest golf dome of all time in the Chicago area. So if there is or was a bigger one somewhere in town. Golfers on Golf would like to know when and where.

Straight on view inside the Willow Hill Golf Dome.

There was hope to officially open the dome for golf next Monday (December-12). But Village of Northbrook inspectors will do a final inspection that has been moved back to Monday. Which leaves opening day for some point after the 12th. But hopefully shortly thereafter.

Knebelkamp isn’t stopping with the addition of the dome. While he has already added a comfortable new clubhouse complete with a patio for outdoor dining or beverages. There is more to come in terms of golf.

Knebelkamp has hired architect Greg Martin to add a new 9-hole par 3 course, with work starting in 2023. Which will bring Willow Hill to 18 holes. Knebelkamp has some other plans for Willow Hill which will get explained as soon as possible. But there is some hope for an outdoor concert area.

Indoors the dome won’t just be for golf. Golf which will include 20+ hitting places, will be more of a daytime option. While youth sports and other activities will come along in the evening hours.

But since the dome is still a few more days away from opening, stay clicked in here or visit Willowhillgolfdome.com for opening day information. While you wait to bring your clubs, Willow Hill is celebrating the holidays with a light show. Guests can drive the 1.7 mile holiday trail around the hill in their cars. The holiday light show starts daily at 5 PM and runs into January.

THE WADLEY TROPHY (L) and the BMW Championship trophy stand together at Wilmington Country Club home of the 2022 BMW Championship.

THE 2023 BMW CHAMPIONSHIP returns to the Chicago area from August 15-20 at the Olympia Fields Country Club, that previously hosted the championship in 2020. But without fans due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Jon Rahm won the 2020 BMW Championship with a 66-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole.

But while tickets have been on sale-currently there is a holiday ticket option for fans to take advantage of.

Patrons can purchase a discounted ticket option through December 31st. A 1-day-ANY Day Grounds ticket is now available for $85.00

So wait there is more. Grounds tickets, upgraded Trophy Club and other top-tier hospitality venue tickets are available in limited quantities.

Fans can now secure their tickets to see the top stars of the PGA Tour at Olympia Fields by visiting BMWchampionship.com.

Because under the new PGA Tour format-starting in 2023, only 50 players will be in the field instead of 70 players like in past years. Two-time defending champion Patrick Cantlay, will still need to earn his way into the field of the 2023 BMW Championship.

With the BMW Championship driving out of town in 2024-2025-2026, this is the last chance for four years to see the PGA Tour play here in the Chicago area.

All proceeds benefit the Evans Scholars Foundation that awards full college tuition and housing to deserving caddies at various colleges and universities across the country. The BMW Championship has raised over $44 million dollars for caddie scholarships, since it started in 2007.

Ticket hospitality options include the Trophy Club, The Island, The Clocktower Club and the 1915 Club. But all patrons including children must have a ticket all of the above listed hospitality venues.

Vince Pellegrino WGA Sr. VP of Tournaments is suggesting that all fans who plan on attending, buy their tickets early. So to learn more and or purchase tickets from this holiday option, you must do so by December 31st. So visit BMWChampionship.com.

Settler’s Hill in Batavia-now open for business.

ON THE HILL!

Settlers Hill is open for business again, and the Greg Martin renovation is over.

But unfortunately not everything is open for business. Because the outstanding looking new practice range looks great.

But, the range was not able to open in early August because range balls that were ordered months ago. Have not yet arrived. So as the old saying goes-wait until next year.

The new Settler’s Hill driving range is in mint condition, as the wait for the new range balls continues.

But the wait until next year, became this year, as the course that closed in October of 2020 reopened in 2022.

With the golf course located on a landfill, there are regulations which must be followed-when working on the cap of dirt that seals the top.

But in-spite of a few restrictions, architect Greg Martin took the moving parts the project had to offer, and moved them around just enough, to produce one of the best public courses in Chicago’s western suburbs. Granted, like any golf course that has just reopened from renovation there are some grow-in spots, firm greens, and soft bunkers. But the course with the views created by Martin, will leave golfers with looks not found in the Chicago area.

The new par-3 sixth hole at Settler’s Hill. 153 yards from the back tees.

The first thing that will look different, will be the first hole.

Because the new first hole, used to be the the second hole. As the routing Martin created, slides the rotation up one hole.

The new first, was the second, the former third hole, is now the second hole. The 18th hole was the former first hole and so-forth. So the routing allows golfers to start their round, next to where the new clubhouse is being built. Which is between the new range and new tee’s for 1 and 10. But the new clubhouse’s opening is TBD. 2023 is not likely, 2024 is a maybe.

The 130 yard par-3 third hole. The new bridge in the fore-front.

So for the meantime, the old barn clubhouse that has some improvements, will remain the clubhouse.

Across the parking lot from the big barn, next to the real old building, is the new four-hole short course. None of the holes are over a 100 yards, and are fun to play. They also make a great warm up before tackling 18 holes on the big course. Junior golfers will have fun playing all four holes.

CLICK HERE TO HEAR the interview with Settler’s Hill Operations Manager Dominic Navigato. (recorded prior to the course closing for 2022).

The newly elevated tee shot on the Par 5, 548 yard-16th hole.

The changes on the 18 hole course, include two new par-3 holes. Martin really created something special by taking out the brush to the right of the old tee box on the former seventh hole.

The new par-3 sixth hole plays to a green over the creek surrounded by a wooded area. This is a hole that just fits the landscape. The other new par-3 is the 15th, 160 yards with a deceptive green hidden behind a front bunker.

Martin added some elevation, in fact a lot of elevation on the par-5 16th hole. Moving the tee boxes up top on the hill, creates some adventure as golfers circle around the pond that guards the right side of the fairway.

Settler’s Hill is open and much improved, but not finished. So to learn more see Settlershill.com or call (630)-232-1636.

CHERRY HILLS FINISHES TOM DOAK RESTORATION

Cherry Hills Country Club greens around Little Dry Creek.

CHERRY HILLS COUNTRY CLUB in Denver Colorado, a long time championship venue, and site of Arnold Palmer’s lone U.S. Open win in 1960, has finished a major renovation by Renaissance Golf and Architect Tom Doak.

So the decade long project of the William Flynn designed golf course is now ready for the 2023 U.S. Amateur, which will be the third U.S. Amateur held at the club (1990-2012), that has also held the U.S. Senior Amateur (1976) and the U.S. Mid-Amateur (1983). This will be the clubs 10th hosting of a United States Golf Association (USGA) championship.

Cherry Hills Country Club-home of the 2023 U.S. Amateur Championship.

During the restoration process the golf course underwent work to help the playability of the golf course.

But the course was lengthened to keep it championship ready for years going forward.

Renaissance Golf associate Eric Iverson led the direction of the project.

The main issue was putting Little Dry Creek back in position last spring.

So Little Dry Creek was repositioned around several greens and fairways on both nines. But the project helped reduce course flooding, and help restore strategic shot values that Flynn originally created.

The creek had movement on the back-nine around holes 14-16. But with water now in play the approach shots on these par 4’s will make them among the most difficult par-4s in the country.

Because of a tree management program added to the project, several holes including five, nine, 10, 11, 13, 14 and 16 were lengthened. The original Flynn routing saw the front nine weave like a “figure eight” on the inside of the property. With the back-nine running counter-clockwise around the outside of the property.

Flynn’s work also included clubs like Shinnecock Hills, The Country Club, and the Kittansett Club. But Flynn also made contributions at Merion and Pine Valley.

Past championships at Cherry Hills included the 1938-1960 and 1978 U.S. Opens. The 1941 and 1985 PGA Championship. The 1950 Women’s Western Open, the 2005 U.S. Women’s Open, the Palmer Cup in 2009 and the BMW Championship in 2014.

But for more information please visit CHCC.com.

GOLF AT MISTWOOD FARMS-IT’S AS SWEET AS HONEY

THE HONEY IS HERE at Mistwood Golf Club home of McWethy’s Tavern. So grab a bottle or two before the holidays arrive. Mistwoodgc.com or see Mcwethystavern.com Bee Keeper and Mistwood Farms expert Angelica Carmen at Mistwood Golf Club (R).

THE GOG BLOG by RORY SPEARS, Director of Content and Creation for Golfers on Golf. Follow Rory on Twitter @GogBlogGuy or connect on LinkedIn and Facebook.

The Bees are here at Mistwood Golf Club or Mistwood Farms.

MISTWOOD GOLF CLUB

OR SO YOU THOUGHT !

So does Mistwood Farms have a good ring to it. Because now when you play golf at Mistwood, the course has some signs and traits of being a farm.

Angelina Carmen is the club’s or farms bee keeper. But her role has expanded since leaving Cog Hill and joining Mistwood. None the less-the honey is good, so she is now helping Mistwood grow you might say in other ways.

Between holes 2 & 6 food products are being grown.

But just to the left of the second tee box, is a food growing area. So you need to keep your drives from being pulled low and left. Because you should be aiming for the pot-bunkers closer to the second green anyway.

Carmen’s work has expanded beyond the honey, and here is one place that it is really evident.

Have you seen the Green-House at Mistwood. The new shell on the grounds isn’t as green as superintendents Ben Kelnhofer’s greens on the course. But things are happening in the greenhouse.

IF YOUR WONDERING what is that new place off to the right of the 8th fairway, or behind the 9th tee box.

Well it’s Carmen’s office on the course, and as her role expands at Mistwood, it will be interesting to see all that happens in the new greenhouse.

Mistwood Golf Course has won it’s share of awards, celebrating architect Ray Hearn’s handy work over the clubs 18 holes and practice areas.

But the farm side of Mistwood is now a winner too. Because it has received a $9,000.00 grant from the Fairways Foundation for the work at Mistwood to grow biodynamically, meaning all organic inputs with no chemicals. IPM methods, crop rotation and companion planting. The Farm is Mistwood’s new chapter in a commitment to environmental social responsibility in golf course maintenance, food growth and food service.

Carmen prepared the extensive application to be reviewed by the Fairways Foundation to receive the grant, that only 12 applicants in the world were awarded. See more about the Fairways Foundation at www.thefairwaysfoundation.com.

The solar powered greenhouse (pictured above) is used to transition seedlings to the farm. The farm seen near the second hole tee box, is 8,000 square feet. But inn it’s first year alone, is has grown over 100 varieties of plants. These include edible flowers, herbs, vegetables.

Mistwood Honey-sweeten up your holiday season.

THE BEE HIVES and the honey is part of a project with Bee All About it located in Villa Park. The company brought 10 bee hives to Mistwood, which are now located between the maintenance shed and the bush-line down the right side of the 10th hole.

Bee All About It manages the hives on property at Mistwood, which are producing more than 500 pounds of honey a year. Now for sale in McWethy’s Tavern-but for now NOT at McWethy’s Sports Bar in the dome.

Carmen’s awards include the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago in 2021. She was a runner-up in the Conservation Award category by the GCSAA (Golf Course Superintendents Association of America).

CLICK HERE to hear the full interview with Mistwood Farms specialist Angelica Carmen

So all this winter Mistwood Tavern at Mistwood Golf Club is open. Because if you need a holiday gift, don’t forget a bottle or two of honey from Mistwood Farms. Mistwood is located on Renwick Road in Romeoville. Just west of Weber Road. You can learn more at Mistwoodgc.com or McwethysTavern.com.

THE GOG BLOG SPEAKS OUT-THE PGA SHOW IS BACK

MISTWOOD GOLF DOME on Rt. 53 in Bolingbrook is your home for indoor golf all winter long. But the dome is home to McWethy’s Sports Bar where you can see all the game action, while enjoying some good food & the cold/warm beverage of your choice.

CLICK HERE to hear the latest on Mistwood Golf Club & The Mistwood Golf Dome in our recent interview with Mistwood Director of Golf Andy Mickelson (A-R). #Simulators

The new Willow Hill Golf Dome in Northbrook, is now inflated-But not yet open.

YOU CAN TELL IT’S DOME SEASON, because just a few of them are popping up around town.

BU THEN AGAIN it seems like the home of the golf simulators are really starting to pop-up as well.

I don’t think one can drive it more then 10 miles around the Chicago area without finding a place that has golf simulators, with a bar and grill attached.

EVEN THE PREMIER Golf Dome in town-the Mistwood Golf Dome in Bolingbrook, is getting ready to add maybe 3 simulators. But with the prospect of maybe playing the Mistwood Golf Club on them. So stay tuned.

OUR VERY OWN LEN ZIEHM of LEN ZIEHM ON GOLF had a wild week at the ING (International Network of Golf) Winter summit in Sebring Florida. It started with Len in a pro-am for a Mini-Tour event. His pro partner opened the round with his first shot of the day by making an ace. Then another pro-partner holed his final shot of the day from the fairway to tie for lead after Round 1.

LEN ZIEHM ON GOLF photographer Joy Sarver joined the ace club, when she hit a 7-Wood 110 yards into the jar for a hole-in-one (her first). Congrats Joy.

BROADCASTING word is that NBC is replacing Roger Maltbie and Gary Koch, with two new members of the their golf broadcast team. Brad Faxon and Smylie Kauffman are rumored to be the new members of NBC Golf. At least NBC didn’t hire yet another UK type, now if they could get rid of Dan Hicks.

CBS replaced retiring Nick Faldo with South African Trevor Immelman, the weak link of CBS golf. Trevor the timid-one won’t come close to filling the pair Sqairz Golf Shoes that Faldo wore in recent years.

TIGER CAN’T WALK which meant he Withdrew from the Hero Outing. Tiger in an outing named Hero-what’s wrong with this picture. Well Mr. December was replaced with Sepp Straka, who actually is a competitive player and was T-1 after the first round. Woods also spent time calling the removal of Greg Norman from the LIV Tour. Maybe Woods should look in the mirror and call for the removal of PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan. DITTO TO: RORY MCILROY on the same topic. Norman has since fired back at Woods and McIlroy and good for him.

THE PGA SHOW IS BACK January 24-27 in Orlando Florida. Or at least most of it is. 10 major equipment companies are back, so far only TaylorMade Golf and Tour Edge are not returning. I have reached out to Tim Clarke at Wilson Golf to confirm or deny a return to the show-but Clarke has been out of the country and not as of yet responded.

Front Office Executives from companies like Callaway-Topgolf, Titleist-FootJoy, and Cobra-Puma all issued statements about returning to the show. Several major apparel brands are also making a return to Orlando, like Ashworth and Peter Millar. Chicago based woman’s golf apparel leader Golftini announced a return to the show.

I AM VERY curious what this years attendance will end up being. Much better than last year-that’s for sure. But not likely as many as 2020-right before Covid struck.

THE ZERO FRICTION B-52 Bomber Ball.

JUST LIKE THE PLANE

GOLFERS CAN NOW BOMB IT with the B-52 golf ball.

So if your lacking the distance you want or need for your game, try the B-52 Bomber Ball.

The Bomber Ball was created with a 392-dimple pattern, which creates less spin than the more traditional of late-496 dimple ball.

So as a result the 20% reduction in dimples, allows for better velocity and reduces spin, which results in longer drives.

“The goal was to build a high-quality distance ball in a value pack, so we made this 15-ball package,” said Zero Friction Founder and CEO John Iacono. “To sum things up-its more distance and more balls for a reasonable price.” To order see Zerofriction.com or visit your local PGA Tour Store.
