Cherry Hills Country Club greens around Little Dry Creek.

CHERRY HILLS COUNTRY CLUB in Denver Colorado, a long time championship venue, and site of Arnold Palmer’s lone U.S. Open win in 1960, has finished a major renovation by Renaissance Golf and Architect Tom Doak.

So the decade long project of the William Flynn designed golf course is now ready for the 2023 U.S. Amateur, which will be the third U.S. Amateur held at the club (1990-2012), that has also held the U.S. Senior Amateur (1976) and the U.S. Mid-Amateur (1983). This will be the clubs 10th hosting of a United States Golf Association (USGA) championship.

During the restoration process the golf course underwent work to help the playability of the golf course.

But the course was lengthened to keep it championship ready for years going forward.

Renaissance Golf associate Eric Iverson led the direction of the project.

The main issue was putting Little Dry Creek back in position last spring.

So Little Dry Creek was repositioned around several greens and fairways on both nines. But the project helped reduce course flooding, and help restore strategic shot values that Flynn originally created.

The creek had movement on the back-nine around holes 14-16. But with water now in play the approach shots on these par 4’s will make them among the most difficult par-4s in the country.

Because of a tree management program added to the project, several holes including five, nine, 10, 11, 13, 14 and 16 were lengthened. The original Flynn routing saw the front nine weave like a “figure eight” on the inside of the property. With the back-nine running counter-clockwise around the outside of the property.

Flynn’s work also included clubs like Shinnecock Hills, The Country Club, and the Kittansett Club. But Flynn also made contributions at Merion and Pine Valley.

Past championships at Cherry Hills included the 1938-1960 and 1978 U.S. Opens. The 1941 and 1985 PGA Championship. The 1950 Women’s Western Open, the 2005 U.S. Women’s Open, the Palmer Cup in 2009 and the BMW Championship in 2014.
