Omni LaCosta Champions Course in Carlsbad California.

Southern California’s Omni La Costa Resort and Spa, a premier destination for golf and relaxation. Has won the bid to host the 2024-2025-2026 NCAA Men’s and Women’s Division 1 National Championships.

Play will be contested on the historic Champions Golf Course, that will receive a renovation by famed golf architect Gil Hanse. Hanse and his Caveman team will begin work in 2022.

The NCAA Women’s Division 1 Championship was last held in Southern California in 28 years ago. The last Men’s NCAA Division 1 Championship was played at Riviera Country Club located in Pacific Palisades in 2012.

The University of Texas serve’s as host for all three sets of championships. NCAA players have restriction dates, when they’re not allowed to play the course in advance of the championships.

“We are thrilled that the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Golf Championships will return to California in 2024,” said Connie Hurlbut, senior associate commissioner at the West Coast Conference, and chair of the NCAA Division 1 men’s golf committee. “The collegiate golf community is so excited about the opportunity to play La Costa as a neutral site for the championships. We have complete confidence that it will prove to be a unique and challenging championship experience for all.”

The Omni La Costa resort in Carlsbad California

The Omni LaCosta Resort and Spa is home to 36 holes of golf, the Champions and the Legends golf Courses.

La Costa has over 400 acres of property that created in a Spanish Mission style village.

Shortly after the resorts opening, the original architect Dick Wilson (Cog Hill Dubsdread) designed golf course hosted a made for TV CBS Golf Classic. The PGA Tour brought the annual Tournament of Champions (before it’s move to Kapalua Maui) to La Costa from 1969 through 1998. Several Hall of Famers starting with Jack Nicklaus won championships at La Costa. The original course layout hosted the 1999 Match Play Championship.

The Omni La Costa is one of 12 golf resorts in the Omni portfolio. Omni is known for outstanding service and amenities. Hanse who is perhaps the hottest name in the world of course design and architecture, will over see the renovation of the Champions Course. Omni Hotels are currently reviewing multiple designs, that Hanse and his team have submitted.

Hanse has been one of the golfs busiest architects of late. His recent projects that include, Pinehurst #4 and the resorts Par 3 “Cradle Course.” Other projects include the now under construction East Course at Frisco Texas ( New home of the PGA of America). The course will host two PGA Championships in 2027 and 2034. And a future Ryder Cup. The East and West Courses at Winged Foot, and famed East Course at Merion Golf Club. Trump Doral’s famed Blue Monster, is yet another recent Hanse renovation.”

“Our team is excited to be part of bringing La Costa’s esteemed stature in American tournament golf into a new generation. But just as we did with the Olympic Course in Rio, we embrace collaborating with the NCAA on creating a course that is suitable for both top-tier men and women players as well as Omni La Costa’s members and resort guests,” says Hanse.

“Bob and Blake Rowling (owners of Omni Hotel’s and Resorts) have tremendously high golf IQ’s. So they understand what quality golf is and what it takes to make it a reality. Their support has been invaluable and motivates us to create something special here in this excellent Southern California landscape. It’s too soon to say if the characteristics will be more like a George Thomas Los Angeles Country Club, Bel Air or Riviera style. With an Alister MacKenzie look, like at the Valley Club of Montecito, or something else. But we’re looking forward to ‘solving the puzzle’ out in the land.”

NCAA Division 1 Men’s Golf Championships started competition in 1939. With the Women’s Championship  beginning play in 1982.

Past NCAA Division 1 Golf Champions include Jack Nicklaus, Phil Mickelson, Ben Crenshaw, current U.S. Open Champion Bryson DeChambeau, and Tigers Woods. Past Women’s Champions include Annika Sorenstam and Stacy Lewis.

IF SOMEONE has ever told you to “Get A Grip” maybe they knew you are a golfer.

Because getting a grip, the proper and right fitting and feeling grip on your clubs, is almost as important as what clubs you play.

Getting fit for the right clubs has become very important in today’s golf world. Another part of the fitting process has become grips, and the shape, size and feel on the clubs you use can make a serious difference in your game.

Lamkin Square Top Grip

Lamkin is expanding it’s offering in it’s Grip Fitting System, and is introducing new changes in the Deep V STD & Mid Product line.

DEEP V features include, Accentuated pistol V shape to serve as a guide for consistent hand placement.

A thin Genesis rubber sleeve providing feel, traction and durability of rubber with the lightweight characteristic of polyurethane grips. Two new shapes called PistolClaw and SquareTop will compliment previous similar models. PistolClaw was created with the help of Justin Rose, who was one of the first in the early use of “claw putting and gripping style.”

Square Top has parallel sides and a square top, these grips add “down-the-line” stroke control. MAP at $24.99

The Lamkin Pistol Claw grip.

The Lamkin interactive Putter Grip Fitting System displays were delayed in 2020 due to the pandemic. As a result hundreds of units will be shipped into the US and Canada in early 2021.

At these locations golfers can switch a “click-on-grip”, that will allow players to test their styles on the spot.

Calibrate Sonar+Tour MAP ( $9.49) with Wrap Calibrate at ($8.49).

Lamkin will expand the Crossline series with a 360 Genesis Material Full Cord. This line was first created in partnership with Taylor Made, but is added as a Lamkin product in 2021.

The grip is made for players that want a smoother feel than cord grips, but like a higher level of surface traction.

Calibrate includes a ST+2 Hybrid Calibrate (MAP $10.49), ST, or Smooth Tack, which offers a smooth tacky surface, and a dual zone performance in a half cord grip design.

You can learn more about all of Lamkin’s ( company founded in Chicago) grips by visiting Lamkingrips.com.

THE GOG BLOG SPEAKS OUT-DJ AND HIS NEW JACKET

DJ GETS A NEW GREEN JACKET!

Congratulations to Dustin Johnson on winning the Masters, who was my pick to win.

20 Under Par at Augusta National is pretty special golf. DJ seemed calm, cool and collected all 4 days that was until after he won, when he was almost to choked up to speak at the ceremony.

So now with the men’s 2020 majors complete, we can look forward to the next major in 2021. The Masters is up on the tee again in just 5 months, a very short time for Johnson to be reigning champion. But who knows, he might win two in-a-row by next April.

A few other closing thoughts on Masters week in the fall. This tradition unlike any other can go back to being in April. It was something neat this past week to be able to see, but I can’t wait to have the Masters back in April. When it kind of launches golf season here in Illinois, and for much of the northern part of the country. I’m looking forward to seeing the patrons back as well on the hallowed Augusta National grounds, one can only hope that is what we will see.

THE OTHER 2021 men’s majors are in May, the PGA Championship at Kiawah Island in South Carolina, on Pete Dye’s Ocean Course. In June the U.S. Open goes west to Torrey Pines in California, on the South Course. The British Open is in July at Royal St. George’s. The rescheduled Ryder Cup is at Whistling Straits in Haven Wisconsin, in late September.

MAJOR SEASON is not over for 2020. The Women’s U.S. Open will take place at the Champions Golf Club near Houston next month, stay tuned.

A PERFECT 10. I didn’t expect that from Tiger Woods, but it’s not surprising. Augusta National can jump up and do that to anybody, if you hit the ball in the wrong spot on the right hole. The fact the both Tiger and Phil Mickelson made the cut, made it a good week for them. I’m not sure how much longer that will happen. Both players walked off into the sunset after their final hole yesterday by making birdie on 18, great way to end the week.

It was interesting to hear people this week call Woods the old man, even though he walks like it these days. But Phil is older, and so were some of the past champions, including Bernhard Langer, now the oldest player to make the cut at age 63.

HERE’S HOPING there is nothing really wrong with Bryson DeChambeau who said he didn’t feel well this past week. DeChambeau said he was suffering from some dizziness and other issues. These days it’s normally the fans who get dizzy watching DeChambeau’s long drives.

PRODUCT REVIEWS I have received a few products over the last few months to check out, and here are my thoughts.

Sqairz Golf Shoes, with all the traction you could ever need.

SQAIRZ golf shoes.

They are different, but they are good. It’s taken me a bit to get comfortable in them.

Sqairz depending on which model you get, can be a much heavier golf shoe than many golfers are used to. They did create different wear spots for me on my feet. As a result after the first time I wore them, I had 2 cuts on each foot, and a blood blister on one toe. The good news is that I am glad I did not give up on them, because 5 rounds later they are now feeling broke-in and much more comfortable. The extra weight on my pair of Sqairz shoes is keeping my feet from moving around as much when I swing. I’ve started scoring better in recent rounds since I have worn them. Sir Nick Faldo loves them, you might too. Check out a pair, great holiday gift, get the holiday bundle on sale all month long.

The other highlights about Sqairz, is that when they say they are waterproof, they are. I have never had a shoe keep my feet so dry on wet days, or when the morning dew is in full force. Another strong point for me with Sqairz, is the little bubble on the shoelaces, that help keep them tied through the entire round. I’ve always had trouble keeping my laces tied with other brands, and it’s annoying having to keep retying your shoes every two holes.

Canteen Spirits Vodka Soda

Canteen Spirits Vodka Soda, designed by a golfer for golfers, in five different flavors.

I did not get to try the lime flavored that I would like too try, but I had a couple of other flavors from the line.

The first one I tried was the Black Cherry. It was good, but I thought the Black Cherry flavor did not stand out as much as I would have liked. Watermelon was even better and the watermelon flavor was much more apparent in the taste, I thought the watermelon flavor was really good, and would be a great thirst-quencher on the golf course. It’s also a sugar-free drink.

I received a can of the Cucumber flavor. I’m not a Cucumber person, so I had a friend who loves Cucumbers try it and they loved it. Calling it tasty, refreshing, and thirst- quenching. Check out more spirits by Canteen and visit the website DrinkCanteen.com.

OAKBROOK TERRACE based Zero Friction Golf has expanded it’s product line into the Laser Range and yardage devices.

The two models, Laser Pro retails at $229.99 and the Laser Pro Sm at $329.99.

The biggest difference in these range finders, is the newly created pistol shaped rubber handle grip. making it easy to get your yardage quickly and accurately. Just aim and click.

“We wanted to be in the laser business, but we didn’t want to create another “me-too” palm held unit,” said John Iacono, Zero Friction Founder. “What we really wanted was a pistol-style grip. It’s simple to use. It’s much easier to hold steady in your hand than a unit that sits in your palm. It vibrates when it locks in on the target. So we ended up with exactly what we wanted. A unique product with impassive technology that fits our brand.”

Some of the features include, 1000=yard range at 1/-1 yard. Conforms to rules of golf. Measures in yards or meters, waterproof device IPx5 carry case, scan and pin lock modes, easy to read LCD magnify 6x. It’s lightweight at 6.5 oz or 182 grams.
