It’s time for the first Illinois PGA Section major of the year, the Match Play Championship at Kemper Lakes.

Here is hoping for some good weather to get all the matches in and dry. Even though it sounds like some rainy weather could strike during the week ahead.

Kemper Lakes is in great shape and it would be great if it stayed that way for the championship.

I will be out there a couple of times this week to provide some updates.

ENJOYED having Kemper Lakes GM Johm Hosteland on our Golfers on Golf Radio program yesterday, along with J Michael DeAgostino from Grand Tarverse Resort. If you missed it GTR has spent over 7million to renovate all the rooms in it’s famed tower hotel. A must stop if your headed Northern Michigan way. Grandtraverseresort.com.

GSHeader_small Innisbrook sign

The innisbrook Resort just north of Tampa Florida, is home to the Valspar Championship on the PGA Tour.

This coming Sunday former Kemper Sports VP Doug Schmidt joins us from beautiful Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club, home of the PGA Tour’s Valspar Championship.

This Sunday Innisbrook will be our destination of the week. Even though it’s in Florida, Innisbrook is on the Gulf so there is usually a nice breeze. So Innisbrook is a great destination year round and not just in the winter months. Doug is in the sales department so he can help plan your visit and bookyour tee times.

Of course in the winter months it’s a great destination. Four golf courses to pick from and plenty of restuarants and other great things to do. The accomendations are great with many of the room having views of the golf courses. See innisbrookgolfresort.com for more information.

COLLEGE GOLF well it’s on to the NCAA Women’s National Championship for the Wildcats of Northwestern. I had the chance to speak with head football coach Pat Fitzgerald on Saturday and the Cubs game, and he says Emily Fletcher the ladies golf coach is getting “rock star status” on the Evanston campus.

The Wildcats won their Shoal Creek in Alabama regional by a whopping 18 shots, that’s pretty darn good. Next stop is Oregon.

SPEAKING OF OREGON… Aaron Wise who played at Oregon and was the runner up at last years Western Amateur at Rich Harvest Farms, was the medalist at the qualifier for the MacKenzie Tour or Canadian Tour part of the PGA developmental tour. Wise shot 14 under par, a good season on this tour will move him up to the Web.com tour.

ILLINOIS the men’s golf team is preparing for their regional in Kohler on the Blackwolf Run Meadow Valley Course next week May 16-18. Good luck Illinois.

With great weather yesterday, I hope many of mom’s took advantage of the free golf that was offered bymany of our local clubs.

OAK MEADOWS GOLF CLUB might be closed for renovation, but Maple and Green Meadows are open for golf. There is still much going on at Dupage Golf so visit Dupagegolf.com and find out what’s happening. Golfers you will be glad you did.

Northwestern Women’s Team is off to the Nationals

The Northwestern Women’s Golf Team is off to the NCAA national championship after winning it’s regional at Shoal Creek in Alabama.

Freshman Janet Yao and Stephanie Lau both shot even par in the final round to lead the way for the Wildcats. NU won the regional by 18 shots.

The regional championship was the first in the schools history for either the men or the women.

The previous best finish was second place last year, and back in 2000.

The team is coached by Emily Fletcher who was recently named the B1G Ten Coach of the Year.

The Men’s Team at Illinois has been named the #1 Seed for the regional in Kohler Wisconsin, that takes place from May 16-18, on the Meadow Valley Golf Course. If they advance, Illinois would also head to Oregon for the NCAA National Championship.

DSC03909 Rory and Payne the pose DSDSC05369 Payne at Kemper 1 DS The Gog Blog by Rory Spears, Editor and Director of Content, Follow Rory on Facebook, Linkedin and Twitter @GogBlogGuy. (L) with the Payne Stewart statue at Pinehurst, (R) the glow of Stewart still flows through the clubhouse at Kemper Lakes in Kildeer. Stewart won his first major title in 1989 when he won the PGA Championship.

CZAwer3WUAAP6oD kemper lakes logo

A new logo and a new look and Kemper Lakes Golf Club.

EDITORS NOTE : BIG 3 Partner and Daily Herald Golf Writer Len Ziehm and I, toured and played the Kemper Lakes Golf Club this past week as it prepares to host the first Illinois PGA major of the year, the Match play Championship. Here are my observations.

Kemper Lakes Golf Club is at a crossroads. While it is moving forward and looking to the future, it is also remembering where it’s been as it preserves it’s history.

The late Payne Stewart is a big part of that history and it would be wise for the club to make sure they never lose sight of that. While Stewart is so fondly remembered at Pinehurst where he won his third and final major the 1999 U.S. Open, it never seems that his first two majors get much of Stewart’s spotlight. This years Ryder Cup will bring back memories of his first U.S. Open win at Hazeltine, but perhaps as part of Kemper Lakes future, the  club should make a statement about Stewart’s past and his link to the PGA.

DSC04552 KL 15 green less than 100 DS

One of the great new views at Kemper Lakes is on the approach shot to the Par 5, 15th hole.

In 2024 the USGA will remember Stewart when they take yet another U.S. Open back to Pinehurst No.2, it’s fourth in just 25 years.

The question is, could the PGA make a statement by remembering Stewart in 2024 by awarding Kemper Lakes a PGA Championship, on the 35th anniversary of his PGA win, and the 25th year since his passing.

2024 is on the PGA future site grid for the taking, and it would be nice if Kemper Lakes would be given a shot to take it. The first real test of the improvements made over the last few years at Kemper Lakes by golf architect Rick Jacobson and his team, get put on display next week during the IPGA match play.

In June of 2018 Kemper Lakes will be tested by the LPGA Professionals at the KPMG/PGA Championship. If Lydia Ko and her friends don’t come and shoot five or six under par every day, Kemper will have passed the test, that’s needed to take the next step of a men’s major championship.

DSC04447 kemper Lakes par 3 3rd DS

The Par 3, 3rd hole at Kemper Lakes.

The club has taken the next step of improving it’s golf course. The new bunker designs are much better than the old ones, and the new tee program is not yet completely done, and the yardage not yet on the scorecard is more than a wee-bit over 7,000.

But it doesn’t have to stop there, there is plenty of room to add on in places, that in the past weren’t places golfers even noticed during their rounds at Kemper Lakes. The yardage number is not limited at Kemper Lakes. Something else that is not limited seems to be parking, and it’s right there by the golf course. When it comes to onsite parking, Kemper Lakes is the Northside’s answer to what Cog Hill has on the Southside.

DSC04538 Kemper 9 DS

The Par 4, 9th hole at Kemper Lakes, is now longer with new tee boxes.

But the new bunkers, tee’s and minor tree removal program have given Kemper Lakes a more powerful look.

That look starts long before the Par 4 16th hole, but it’s at 16 where golfers of all skill levels hang on for dear life. Chicago doesn’t have a course with a tougher final three-holes, than Kemper Lakes.

The last three holes have so much character and water, that anything can happen and usually does. Just ask Mike “Radar” Reid about the last three holes at Kemper Lakes. Word is that he will just walk away, as he chooses not to remember them or his near miss at winning one of golfs major championships.

Kemper Lakes is looking at coming up with a name for it’s final three holes, something that plays like the Bear Trap or Snake Pit that currently reside on two of Florida’s PGA Tour courses. No word yet if “Payne’s Ponds” or “Lakes of Payne” or “Payne of Lakes” located not far from the famed “Chain of Lakes” have a chance to be crowned the winner.

No matter what the name turns out to be, one of these days when Kerry Haigh the PGA’s tournament set up guy returns to view the course, he will realize it’s not the Kemper Lakes that the PGA saw in 1989. The new double-chute par 3, 13th hole, now has the length and the direction to create a full stadium like par 3, like the one that’s a big party when the PGA Tour visits Phoenix every February.

The logo is now different as of this year, new are the three ripples that stand for the three ponds on the last three holes. Gone are the bird’s who used to drop things behind them. There is no longer a “dropping” problem at Kemper Lakes.

20160505_091310_001 Kemper Lakes clubhouse DS

Kemper Lakes clubhouse, behind “the tree”. Photo by Len Ziehm.

If there is one thing you might like to see more of, it’s the clubhouse.

There is a question about a big old tree that looms over the front door. It’s a place where in my opinion that next Payne Stewart statue needs to go. Still holding and hugging the famed Wanamaker trophy close to his chest.

The clubhouse is another question. What to do with a clubhouse that looks outstanding on the inside, and is starting to show it’s age on the outside. Rebuilding clubhouses from scratch isn’t cheap, but might the announcement of a PGA coming in 2024, give the club enough incentive and money to rebuild. One tour pro in 1989 compared the clubhouse to one of those state welcome centers you see on the interstate.

A few years after Stewart won his PGA at Kemper Lakes, a former Chicago Bears coach once said, “all the pieces are in place.”

Well all the pieces might not be quite in place at Kemper Lakes, but they are coming together. When they are finished, Chicago will have another course that is capable of handling major championships and anything else the professional golf world can throw at it.

It’s been a good season in golf for two of our Illinois based college golf programs.

The Illinois Men’s Golf Team and Northwestern Women’s Golf each captured the Big Ten Championship.

As a result both programs did very well with post season honors.

The teams are headed into the post season, and hoping this could be the year for a national championship. But there is still work to be done for both squads if that is going to happen.

Illinois Golf Team #1

Coach Mike Small and the Fighting Illini, outside of their newly completed practice center.

For their play in conference events and and in invitational tournaments, the following members of the Men’s Golf Team from Illinois did receive the following post season honors.

Thomas Detry of Illinois was named All-Big Ten First team with teammate Dylan Meyer, Nick Hardy was named Second Team All-Big Ten, while Fifth-Year Senior Alex Burge received a Sportsmanship Award.

Illinois Coach Mike Small was named the Coach of The Year for the Big Ten for the Eighth time. The Illinois Men’s Team won the conference championship for the 7th time in eight years. They will compete at regional’s and likely the national championship will be play in Oregon this year, and the Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove in 2017.

ILLINOIS WOMEN’S GOLF had Bing Singhsumalee named to the All Big Ten Second Team.

Dodging the rain at Palmetto Dunes Resort in South Carolina a few months back, spent this past weekend doing the same thing here in Chicago. The Gog Blog by Rory Spears, Editor and Director of Content. Follow Rory on Facebook, Linkedin and Twitter @GogBlogGuy.

The weather has not been good the last few days and lets hope it clears up and the golfers can get back out on the golf course.

The rain and the cold make for a bad combination, that empties out courses everywhere.

With May now upon us I hope the old saying about April showers and May flowers come true. We all deserve it.

On Saturday as the rain front closed in, it was nice to see a good crowd at Chicago Bill’s Golf in Hanover Park for the demo day.

Among the club manufacturers there Titleist, Taylor Made, Ping, Wilson and Nike. The appointment sheets were full and the lines to get in were forming behind the hitting bays. From all reports there was a good amount of golfers at Cog Hill for their demo day that included reps from about 8 companies.

The fitting process these days is so important, it really helps to get the right clubs in your hands before you even hit them on the course.

Yesterday Golfers on Golf Radio enjoyed catching up with Greg Martin, the new President of the ASGCA (American Society of Golf Course Architects) who was voted into the post at the Associations annual meeting in Washington DC this past week.

Martin of Batavia is currently working on the major renovation of the Oak Meadows Golf Club located in Addison. The course is expected to reopen for play in May of 2017.

For Martin being elected President is a well deserved honor. In recent years Martin’s renovations include the Fox Run Golf Club in Elk Grove, the Wilmette Golf Club in Wilmette, and the Arrowhead Golf Club in Wheaton. Martin will start work this fall at the River Forest Golf Club in Elmhurst on a renovation project.

The U.S. Open is getting closer and closer to having it’s week in the limelight of the Erin Hills Golf Club in Wisconsin.

Erin Hills is one of the 6 public courses that have or are scheduled to host the U.S. Open in it’s 117 year history. The course will close a little early this year, to begin the final preparations for the open. It will not reopen for public play until after the open is completed in 2017.

So far this year about 75% of the tee times and the overnight beds and cottages are booked solid already. So if you wish to play the course before the season ends, call Erin Hills and arrange your stay at Erinhills.com. The new cottage called Waterville is now open for overnight stays.

Last year the golf course got the renovation work, this past spring it was the pro shop over at the Mt. Prospect Golf Club, stop in and check out the pro shop at Mt. Prospect Golf Club.

In addition to the pro shop, I must mention that the practice facilities are so improved that the club is becoming the place to be when you just want to hit balls, or work on the short game.

Not to far down the street from Mt. Prospect is the Arlington Lakes Golf Club, that reopens from renovation on July 1st, in the meantime the clubhouse is getting a $400,000 upgrade on it’s interior. golfers should enjoy the improvements.

Chicagoland Golf

The new issue of Chicagoland Golf is out at the golf courses and the golf retail stores. Look for it now, and remember it’s always free, nothing better than FREE golf.

My column is on how Prairie Landing Golf Club was able to survive having to close, and now has a new lease on life. The 2014 bunker and course renovation has golfers loving the new style of the golf course.

Prairie Landing is not closing this year, or anytime in the foreseeable future. That is another win for the golfers of the area.

College golf is heading toward the Sectionals and then the national championships to be played in Oregon. Stay tuned, is this the year for the Illinois men or the Northwestern Ladies to be fighting for the championship.
