Northbrook’s Nick Hardy chips for birdied on the par 3-17th hole at the Glen Club. Hardy finished the round in 1st place with a 7 under par (64).

THE THIRD ANNUAL EVANS SCHOLARS INVITATIONAL is underway at the Glen Club, in Glenview.

But it’s the second time the event has been played at The Glen Club.

Opening round play, saw Northbrook’s Nick Hardy, the University of Illinois Alum jump out to the lead.

Because with Hardy’s 7 under par (64), and weather conditions changing and not for the better as the day went on, the field had a hard time keeping up with a local player who knows The Glen Club very well.

Hardy’s army that numbered almost 60 people by the back-nine, was cheering both Hardy and his playing partner Brian Campbell (University of Illinois alum) on through their round. But one member of the galley, was on a different side of the ropes this year. Because after not advancing from the Monday qualifier into the field, U of IL alum Dylan Meyer was just enjoying a day at the golf course.

But the finish of his round was not easy for Hardy, who almost splashed his tee shot on the par 3-17th. Hardy left his birdie putt on 18 shorter than he would have liked, and left himself a tough par putt he was thrilled to make.

CLICK HERE to hear the interview with ESI leader Nick Hardy of Northbrook.

Deerfield’s Vince India who won the Illinois Open at the Glen Club, was T-4 at 4 under par after Round 1.

VINCE INDIA of Deerfield wasn’t shy about admitting the conditions were not easy at parts of the round.

But India’s 4 under par 67, left him tied for 4th place after opening round play.

HIGHWOOD’S Patrick Flavin carded a 2 under par 69, that left him T-14. But right behind Flavin was former Glen Ellyn resident Andy pope with a  -1 (70).

BRAD HOPFINGER from Lake Forest opened the tournament with an even par round of 71.

A majority of the top Korn Ferry Tour players are in the 156 player field this week. Including Northwestern alum’s David Lipsky and Dylan Wu. The Glen Club is spread out over 195 acres, and will play to a yardage over 7,200 yards.

Highwood’s Patrick Flavin was T-14 after Round 1 of the ESI.

SO THERE is more good news regarding the ESI.

Fans can get in for free, visit the tournament website, and see how to register for free admission.

There was a free promotional giveaway on Thursday. So why not come out and see what other items might be handed out.

Weather conditions for Round 2, have made things tough on the players. But seven players that got off to rough starts on Thursday, have WD’d from the tournament.

CLICK HERE to hear interviews with in order Andy Pope (Glen Ellyn) Vince India (Deerfield) and Patrick Flavin (Highwood).

NICK HARDY is tied for lead late in Round 2. Stay clicked in for more coverage of the ESI over the weekend.

ZIEHM & SPEARS

They are back with Podcast Series 2021-Volume 17.

So this week Len and Rory discuss this weeks Korn Ferry Tour event the Evans Scholars Invitational, at The Glen Club in Glenview.

But in spite of some bad weather for Day 1, local hero Nick Hardy from nearby Northbrook, Illinois has risen to the top of the leader board with a 7 under par score of 64.

Deerfield’s Vince India is top 5 with a 4 under par 67, and Highwoods Patrick Flavin is 14th at 2 under par.

But Len and Rory also wrap up the 103rd PGA Championship at Kiawah Island Resort near Charleston South Carolina. Because there is still plenty of talk about 50 year old Phil Mickelson winning, that Callaway driver that has “Lefty” hitting bombs down the fairway.

But of course Ziehm and Spears talk both “The Feud” and “The Match”.

THE VOTE IS IN and the Illinois Golf Hall of Fame Class of 2021, will have six new inductee’s on October 1st.

The new class members are the following:

BESSIE ANTHONY- Perhaps the first great female player from Illinois. Anthony won the first three Women’s Western Amateur Championships 1901-1903. But her run didn’t stop there, she won the 1903 U.S. Women’s Amateur at the Chicago Golf Club.

PHIL KOSIN- Publisher of Chicagoland Golf from 1989 until his passing in 2009. In the late 1990’s he started Chicagoland Golf Radio on WMVP Am 1000 and later moved to WSCR. Kosin founded the Illinois Women’s Open in 1995, and eventually moved the tournament to it’s current home at the Mistwood Golf Club.

MASON PHELPS-An Olympic champion who won the Western Amateur twice in 1908 & 1910. But in 1910 he defeated Chick Evans to win the trophy. Phelps made it to the U.S. Amateur semi-finals in 1909, where he lost to fellow Chicagoan Robert Gardner.

GARY PINNS-Pinns is the only five-time winner of the Illinois Open, winning his first title while he was still an amateur. Pinns went on to become the Director of Instruction at the Oak Brook Golf Club.

DR. JIM SUTTIE-Is one of golf ‘s top teaching instructors. Numerous top professional golfers have taken lessons from “Doc”. Suttie is a three-time Illinois PGA teacher of the Year, and a Top 50 instructor in multiple national publications.

HERBERT JAMES TWEEDIE-The golf architect who designed 21 courses in the Chicago area. Two of his courses today that are still most intact are Midlothian and Flossmoor. But both courses are currently seeing restoration work by Ray Hearn. Tweedie helped take the famed Glen View Club home this years Western Amateur, from 9 to 18 holes.

Congratulations to all six new inductee’s of the Illinois Golf Hall of Fame.

PHIL…

So make it #6 in the major’s category for “Lefty”. Because Phil Mickelson is now the oldest major champion in golf history, at 50 years and many months.

But what a great finish, and an amazing gallery, unlike any other. So crowded around the green and the players as they came to the 18th green. I have never seen anything like that in golf. Not at the British Open, not at Cog Hill Western Open, not at Bellerive at the 2018 PGA Championship when Brooks Koepka, beat Tiger. But what an atmosphere, great for the game that is growing every day.

It was great to see this finish for the PGA Championship, and PGA President Jim Richerson. But also good to see a great week for former Illinois PGA section professional Roger Warren. Warren is now the Kiawah Island Resort President, and his resort pulled off a great championship.

MICKELSON just gave hope to all golfers 50 and over, that they can still accomplish something special in golf. But with Mickelson playing a new Callaway Epic Max driver, you have to wonder how many of those drivers Callaway will sell in the next few months.

YOU HAVE TO WONDER IF MICKELSON is now on the radar of Ryder Cup Team Captain Steve Stricker, as Mickelson is now 16th in the point standings for this Septembers Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits. Lefty moved up 42 places in the point standing with his win at Kiawah. So now a solid finish at the U.S Open would likely earn him a spot on the team.

I JUST WISH Kevin Streelman could have made a few more birdies and moved up the leaderboard a place or two. Because Streelman deserved a better fate than he got on Sunday. The putts just would not drop.

GREG OHLENDORF a long time golfer, member at Flossmoor Golf Club and course rater has a new book due out in June. Ohlendorf’s tails about playing every Top 100 in America and the Top 100 courses world wide, sheds light on how to knock-off a bucket list full of courses. Ohlendorf joins us live from Pinehurst on Golfers on Golf Radio this  Saturday at 4:30.

CONGRATS to Highwood’s Patrick Flavin and Jordan Hahn of Elmhurst for being awarded sponsors exemptions into this weeks Evans Scholars Invitational. Great selections by the WGA-ESI Championship committee.

MOVING INTO SOMETHING NEW is Brian Tulk, who has been named General Manager and Director of Golf at Klein Creek in Winfield. Congrats to Brian on the new job.

FINALLY A TIP OF THE CAP or golf visor to Brad Marek the Arlington Heights native, and John Hersey HS alum. Marek a club professional who also played for Indiana University, made the cut and got to stay for the weekend. Never an easy job for club or teaching professionals, to keep up with the best players in the world. Especially during a major championship.

PINE LAKES Country Club in Myrtle Beach South Carolina, known as the “Granddaddy”, closed on April 26th for a restoration of the nearly 100 year old golf course. But the good news is that Pine Lakes should reopen in July. The main part of the work overseen by Craig Schreiner ASGCA, is the new Sunday Bermudagrass greens.

The overall green size will expand by over 21,000 square feet. Pine Lakes is on the dunes and less then 1 mile from the ocean. Schreiner will redo all the bunkers and drainage, so the course plays more like original architect Robert White intended it to. White originally from St. Andrews Scotland was the first president of the PGA of America.

The Big Ten Champions advance to the NCAA Nationals with a second place finish at regionals.

ILLINOIS IS MOVING ON !

The Illinois men’s golf team is headed back to the NCAA National Championships for the 13th straight year. Only the University of Texas has a longer streak at 14 years.

So where to next for the Fighting Illini. Scottsdale Arizona, and the Grayhawk Golf Club, where the national championship will be held on the clubs Raptor golf course.

“This team has matured and has improved in many ways through out the spring,” head coach Mike Small said. “They’ve had very consistent finishes, but to play this field, on this golf course, and persevere through the expectations of a regional qualifying tournament makes me proud. I’m proud of the maturity, and I’m proud of how they took care of business.”

Illinois had strong leadership from it’s All-Big Ten players. Starting with Fifth-year senior Michael Feagles, junior Adrien Dumont de Chassart, and sophomore Jerry Ji, all three collected top eight finishes.

But the Illini had to work through some weather delays that hampered play at times. But in the end, even the weather could not slow down the Illini.

“This was another total team effort. Everybody contributed. But those three guys, all finishing in the top eight, in this field is really hard,” said Small. “There were a lot of good teams here-some good teams did not advance, which can happen-but to have our leaders step up and play well, on top of that total team effort, was big.”

Feagles and Dumont de Chassart finished tied for third, with a 54 hole hole total of 211 (-5). But Ji wasn’t far behind, with a score of 213 (-3) and he finished in eighth place.

So moving on from Stillwater to Scottsdale along with the Illini include, No.4 Oklahoma State who won the regional. No. 21 SMU, No.49 Sam Houston State, and unranked Arkansas-Little Rock. Little Rock advanced by 1 shot over 15th ranked Auburn, and 39th ranked Baylor by 1 shot.

NCAA Nationals are from May 28th through June 2nd.

But the rest of the news from the Big Ten wasn’t as good. Northwestern failed to advance from Oklahoma. Indiana and Ohio State failed to advance from the Florida Regional, Ohio State missed by 2 shots. Iowa did not advance from the Washington regional. Purdue’s Cole Bradley won the Indiana regional as an individual. So he gets to play at nationals. Loyola and Notre Dame, also failed to advance to nationals.

BUT THREE BIG TEN WOMEN’S programs advanced to nationals. Maryland, Michigan and Michigan State. Northwestern did not advance from the Stanford regional.

CONSTRUCTION BEGINS ON UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS ATKINS COURSE

THE CONSTRUCTION PHASE of the renovation of the newly renamed, Atkins course at the University of Illinois is underway. Wadsworth Golf Construction Company that built the golf course over 20 years ago, is back for the renovation.

But this golf course formerly known as Stone Creek Golf Club, will have more than just a new name. Because there will be improvements to the tee boxes, bunkers, greens, tree removal that added over 400 yards. Inside the clubhouse is seeing new improvements as well.

The University of Illinois has named architect Drew Rogers to lead the renovation team, with Troon Golf for operations management.

“Drew has spent many months working on the scope of renovation, while consulting with the Illini staff to create a championship-caliber golf course,” said Assistant Athletic Director for Golf Operations Jackie Szymoniak. “His extensive architectural body of work includes new designs, renovations and restorations across the country. He will provide a great test for future events. At the same time, Rogers was able to build on already great design, to strengthen the overall experience for the general public.”

THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE Rogers will have is the bunkers. Because some will be re-designed, removed, and some new ones added along with new premium sand. So with the removal of some tees and tee relocations, over 400 yards in length was added.

But the course will not fully open for play until 2022. Because of other gifts to the Atkins Club by donors, there will be improvements to the pro shop and team lounge areas. The lounges are for both the men’s and women’s golf teams.

But while there was originally 104 home lots around the course for sale. 25 of those lots have been sold-four area relators are handling the sales of the remaining lots. More details at Build at Stone Creek.
