When in doubt, bet the host professional. Jim Billiter the head golf professional at Kemper Lakes won his third Illinois PGA major championship by winning the Match-Play at his new home course Kemper Lakes.

Billiter survived a serious challenge by Glen Oak head professional Danny Mulhearn, who had won the play event 19 years ago. Billiter who was 2 down with five holes to play, rallied late to win 1 Up with a conceded par putt on the 18th green.

Billiter fell behind on the second hole when Mulhearn made his par, but a Billiter birdie on the par 5, 5th hole made things all-square.

After Mulhearn found the water on the 7th hole, Billiter took his first lead 1 Up. It was short-lived as Mulhearned answered with a 20 foot birdie putt on the 8th hole and again the match was A/S.

kemper Lakes head professional Jim Billiter your 2017 IPGA Match Play Champion

Mulhearn started quickly on the back nine with a 27 foot birdie putt on 10 to go 1 Up. After an Out-of-Bounds drive on 11 by Billiter, Mulhearn went 2 Up. A Billiter birdie on 12 cut Mulhearns lead down to 1 Up.

The par 3, 13th had some drama when Billiter missed the green, Mulhearn converted on a par save of his own, and when Billiter could not, Mulhearn went back to 2 Up.

Billiter’s 6 foot par putt on 14, put him back to 1 Dn. A Billiter par on the par 5, 15th hole brought the match back to A/S.

After both players made bogey on the 16th hole, they went to the famed par 3, 17th hole.

Billiter managed to find the green, with Mulhearn in a side bunker. Mulhearn could not get up and down after his bunker shot went long to the backside of the green, and Billiter went 1 Up after a conceded par putt.

On 18 Billiter found a fairway bunker and his approach just made the front of the green, Mulhearn with a longer fairway shot got home in two shots, but faced the longer putt. After his birdie putt came up short and his par putt conceded, Billiter missed his birdie putt for the win, but his par putt was conceded and the match concluded with a final tally of 1 Up for Billiter. His second match play win.

Click here to hear interviews with Jim Billiter and Danny Mulhearn.

In the semi-finals played in the morning. Mulhearn defeated Garrett Chaussard of Skokie Country Club, and Billiter defeated Curtis Malm of White Eagle Country Club. The next IPGA major is the Illinois Open in August at the Glen Club, with the second course being Briarwood in Deerfield.

The golf season is here and so far Mother nature is not cooperating. The weather has been cloudy, rainy and cold, and in fact some golfers will say we had better weather the first three months of the year. I really hope things start to turn around tomorrow.

It’s that time of year where the golf media will start visiting the tournament sites, and there are plenty this year. The media day season is underway and it started last week at the River Forest Country Club in Elmhurst.

The Big 3, Len Ziehm, Tim Cronin and myself, joined RFCC head professional Chris Gumbach for a round on the home of this years Women’s Western Amateur Golf Championship (WWGA). The championship it’s 117th will be played from June 12-17 and the field of 144 players is full with a waiting list.  See WWGA.org for more details. The River Forest Country Club that just underwent a bunker improvement program by architect Greg Martin, looks in great shape with the new white tour sand for the championship. One player who entered into the field that stems from Colorado, is sporting a +6.2 handicap.

The Ivanhoe Country Club clubhouse, home of the Rust Oleum Championship from June 5-11.

Earlier today the Rust Oleum Championship tee’d off year number two at the Ivanhoe Country Club in Mundelein.

This years championship will be played from June 5-11, the week before the U.S. Open. Tickets on sale now, and all the money is going to various area charities.

Defending champion Max Homa was expected at media day, but had a scheduling conflict with his U.S.Open qualifier and could not attend. Web.com players Vince India of Deerfield (University of Iowa) and Michael Schachner of Mundelein (Duke University) who grew up playing Ivanhoe filled in along with Taylor Pendrith of Canada, who played college golf at Kent State. Pendrith and Schachner along with Lake Forest native Brad Hopfinger received tournament exemptions.

Tournament Chairman Scott Cassion, and Ivanhoe Director of Golf Jim Sobb are encourage about the growth of the championship, and are looking forward to all the golf fans coming out to support this tournament in it’s second season. Tickets are now on sale at Rustoleumchampionship.com. A great field is expected including some players with local ties, and players who have spent time on the PGA Tour.

THE WOMEN’S NCAA REGIONAL’S are underway and things are off to good start for the Lady Wildcats of Northwestern who are in third place in Athens Georgia, top six teams advance to Rich Harvest Farms (RHF).

IN NEW MEXICO things not going so well for the University of Illinois who sit in 13th place out of 18 schools, only the top six move on to RHF. Coach Renee Sloan has recently gone to more of a younger lineup, with some upper classmen sitting out. Not sure that strategy is currently paying off. Illinois will have to rally to make the nationals. Tuesday’s round two needs to be moving day for the Illini.

AT KEMPER LAKES the Illinois PGA is holding it’s first major championship of the year the IPGA Match Play Championship. Past Champion Jim Billiter now head professional at Kemper Lakes is rolling after 6&5 win in his first match. Past champion Travis Johns a winner in his first match 3&2. Rich Dukelow of Medinah blasted current IPGA President Mark Labiak 8&7. Mr. President, less time on IPGA paperwork (LOL).

The golf media gets a look at Mistwood on Wednesday. the home of the Phil Kosin Illinoi Women’s Open.

Mistwood one of Chicago’s top public courses, has now completed all three phases of it’s renovation plan, the golf course, the performance center and the clubhouse. The introduction of McWethy’s Tavern at Mistwood gives the club on of the best 19th holes in all off the Chicago area. IN FACT this just in, the Mothers Day brunch at McWethy’s Tavern has just sold out. McWethy’s welcomed over 800 people for Easter, and now Mother’s Day has pushed the envelope further. See MistwoodGC.com or call (815)-254-3333 for tee times and reservations.

Coming this summer, see DuPagegolf.com

ED STEVENSON Interim Ex-Director of the DuPage County Forest Preserve District was kind enough to show me around the new Preserve at Oak Meadows Golf Club. While I have seen other courses reopen for business with less grass in place after renovations, Stevenson is not ready to announce opening day quite yet and admits some warm weather over the next 50 days would really help the final stages of the grow-in process.

The good news is that this Greg Martin renovation is really taking shape, even if a little slower than hoped for. So when the Preserve does open, it will be really ready for play. The tree removal and new white tour sand really give the course a wow-factor.

In addition, the recent wet weather has tested the new drainage system, and the early reports show that system is working very well. Gone are days of heavy rains putting the course several feet underwater for days. Follow all the progress and news on opening day at DuPagegolf.com.

The Wildcats have been to the University Club at LSU to play in the regionals on two occasions, most recently four years ago.

The Fighting Illini have done it again, make it three straight B1G Ten titles for the men’s golf team.

The 2017 Big Ten title makes it eight wins in just nine years. Something that Coach Mike Small told Golfers on Golf “never gets old.”

The winning score of of 11 under par 829 sets a new Big Ten record, breaking the old record of 838 set by Illinois last year. Junior Dylan Meyer shot a final round one under par 69, to finish the championship at 5 under par, and win the individual title by 1 shot.

Illinois Junior Dylan Meyer the 2017 Big Ten Champion

Meyer set the tone for the Illini with his opening round 7 under par 63, a personal best and a Big Ten record.

On Friday it was Juniors Meyer and Nick Hardy (-3 67) that got Illinois going, and had the Illini up 13 shots after one round. The lead became 20 shots over Purdue and Northwestern after round 2, when the underclassman stepped up to carry the team.

Edoardo Lipparelli’s 4 under par 66 lead the way, with Freshman Michael Feagles coming at at 69. The juniors Meyer and Hardy were back in the 60’s on Sunday to wrap up the championship. Northwestern was second, but 16 shots back of Illinois at 845.

Click here to hear our interview with Illinois Coach Mike Small from Baltimore, after winning the Big Ten title.

“Winning the Big Ten Conference Championship is a major goal on our schedule,” head coach Mike Small said. “To do it again with a different team, gives us a good sense of accomplishment. It continues to give us momentum heading into the NCAA’s.”

Small has now won eight Big Ten titles as the coach of the Illini, and one as player in (1988). Small called a 16 shot win in the Big Ten Championship as “significant”.

The championship was played on the Baltimore Country Club’s East Course known as Five Farms. The course was designed by AW Tillinghast and underwent a restoration by architect Keith Foster in 2014. The yardage was 7,181 and the par was played at 70.

IT WAS TIME for a Senior Women’s Major Golf Championship, and the French Lick Resort along with the Old National Bank has stepped up to the tee and made it happen.

This July 10-12, on the Pete Dye Golf Course, the field of 81 players will embark on a journey that will bring senior major championship golf to women of age 45 and older.

The Sr. LPGA Championship comes to the Legends Tour before the U.S. Sr. Women’s Open that will be contested for the first time at the historic Chicago Golf Club in July of 2018. The Sr. LPGA Championship has a Five-year deal with the resort and the Golf Channel.

The Pete Dye Course at the French Lick Resort.

“French Lick is proud to host such a prestigious event,” says Steve Ferguson, Chairman of the Board for the Cook Group, owners of the French Lick Resort. “We have long supported women’s golf and to now be part of the first major championship for senior women is indeed an honor. We look forward to a great relationship with the LPGA and an outstanding championship.”

The 81 player field will consist of a variety of the, “Whose-Who” in women’s golf. Including LPGA Hall-of-Famers, some current LPGA members and major champions over the age of 45. The championship will be 54 holes and include a purse of over $600,000. There will not be a cut.

“This is a landmark event for the LPGA because it provides a larger platform to celebrate the legends of the game,” said Mike Whan, LPGA Commissioner. “With the USGA’s recently announced U.S. Sr. Women’s Open and now our event, the women that forged the way for the current generation will now have two major championships each year.”

The entrance to the now 100 year old Donald Ross Course in French Lick.

In addition to major championships, there are two tournaments as part of the celebration of Women’s golf.

The Symetra Tour will begin the Sr. LPGA Championship week, as the two tours bridge the gap in women’s golf.

The Symetra Tour with today’s up and coming golfers starts on Friday July 7th and runs through the 9th on the Donald Ross Course, as part of the Donald Ross Centennial Classic. On Friday the 7th and Saturday the 8th, the Senior LPGA Pro-Am will be played on the Dye Course.

With the Senior LPGA to tee of on Monday July 10th. The Sr. LPGA Championship will conclude on Wednesday July 12th. The Women’s U.S Open from Trump Bedminster will begin on Thursday the 13th, essentially having a week plus of days where all the women’s professional golf tours will be bridged together.

Women’s golf history in French Lick reaches back to 1957, when the late Louise Suggs won the French Lick Women’s Open on the Donald Ross course. In 1959 Betsy Rawls won the championship followed by Mickey Wright in 1960.

The sponsor from the championship is the famed Riley’s Children’s Hospital and Foundation.

Today is media day at the French Lick Resort, and the gathered group will find out more about what’s to come.

The is a Symetra Tournament on the front end of the Senior Championship that will help build the bridge between the two groups. Some LPGA players could play in a pro-am that runs in between the two championships, but more to come after today.

TIGER WOODS, is done again for the year after his fourth back surgery, that and four knee surgeries his camp admits he had, some say as many as eight. The real question is Woods done for good. I would say not yet, but if this surgery doesn’t get it done, then it will be time for him to call it quits. If the surgery takes hold, Woods might compete for a title on the PGA Tour in the right event on the right course. But another major does seem out of the question.

PARS UNDER THE STARS, clubs looking for a fun event should try and put together a night golf evening with glow in the dark golf balls. While I have not played in one of the recent events, I did try this one night while in high school on the course where I worked in Prospect Heights, Rob Roy. The game for our group didn’t last long, because we ran out of painted glow in the dark golf balls. But it was fun while it lasted. Foxford Hills in Cary is having such a night on May 13th, it runs from 5:30 Pm to 10 PM you need to sign up by May 5th, and to do so call the pro shop at (847)-639-0400.
