DAVID PAXTON wants you to enjoy the game of golf, even more than you already do.

Because if there is one thing that golfers don’t like about the game, even more than a double or triple bogey, it can be the cost of the golf.

David Paxton on the golf course.

Paxton hasn’t played golf for very long, about a year before Covid invaded.

But once he started golfing with his friends, the golf bug bit and he started playing more often.

So once the pandemic started, Paxton noticed the golf boom, with more people playing. But he would hear stories or people not having enough money to buy all the top level equipment they would like to have.

But sometimes when they did spend top-dollar on equipment, it took away dollars needed for green fees.

So how do you have enough money for both, well you find ways to get a steal on a deal with what you buy, and where your golf budgeted funds go.

Paxton figured there had to be a way to help golfers enjoy the sport even more. So after some time thinking about options, Daily Golf Steals came into the golf world. So what exactly is Daily Golf Steals.

CLICK HERE to hear the full interview with David Paxton on the founding of DGS, and how Daily Golf Steals operates.

Paxton says that,” site visits are increasing every month as the word spreads about Daily Golf Steals.” Hopefully golfers are finding more of what they are looking to put in their golf bag, and use when the get out on the golf course.

SANFORD-FERRIS TO RENOVATE THE CALVARY CLUB IN NEW YORK

HERITAGE OAKS is open for play, 27 holes and the new clubhouse. Heritageoaks.com

The third time is the charm for this historic hole at the Calvary Club in New York-Dick Wilson’s final design.

When golfers go to Cog Hill in Palos Park, to play Dubsdread or Cog Hill Course #4, they are playing one of the great designs by architect Dick Wilson and Joe Lee.

But in New York the Calvary Club is another one of those classic Wilson/Lee designs. Wilson died shortly after the club was completed. But it was also a career launcher for Joe Lee.

The Calvary Club opened on June 26, 1965, with all the looks of a Wilson design including flanking fairway bunkers, green complexes with large putting surfaces surrounded by strategic bunkers. But for Lee the club was his first solo routing, and supervising during construction.

The Calvary Club name comes from the land once being a host to a Calvary troop in the early 1900’s after the Spanish American War. Later the troop became Company D of the 104th Machine Gun Battalion, a unit of the 27th Division of the New York National Guard.

Leading into WWII the Calvary became the 101st Battalion of Company C., which played a key role in the development of the golf course.

Construction will begin next month, and for architect David Ferris, it’s the chance to renovate the course he grew up playing golf at.

“I am extremely excited about the opportunity to return home to Calvary. A place that holds so may wonderful memories and where golf became part of my life,” Ferris said. “When I played Calvary as a kid, I had no idea who Dick Wilson and Joe Lee were. I’m convinced my fascination with the golf course design, and Wilson’s work is rooted in that early immersion. So I have never been more excited about a renovation project.”

The project will include restoring all the bunkers, collection area’s around the greens, restoring fairway widths in the landing area’s. But most of all bringing the original feel of the course by removing trees. Drainage in the practice area, and developing a short game venue. The U.S. Open tee’s off next week at The Country Club, in Brookline MA., Jon Rahm is the defending champion.

FINAL QUALIFYING was held today to make the field at this years U.S. Open, that will be played next week at The Country Club.

Golf’s longest day-36 well played holes, and you might be in to the U.S. Open.

871 players at 11 sites fought for 65 open spots in the open field.

But when the dust settled, it wasn’t the best day for most of our local players, or players with local Illinois ties.

But there were two players who did make it in, and one more with a slight chance.

University of Illinois Senior Adrien de Dumont Chassard grabbed the 8th and final spot in Springfield Ohio at the Springfield Country Club. Chassard’s former U of I teammate Nick Hardy opened with a 65 (-6) in the first round, but fell back over the last 10 holes after leading most of the day, to miss making the open field by 1 shot. But Hardy is 1st alternate.

Other non-qualifiers at Springfield included, Josh Esler (-2), Varun Chopra Champaign (+2), (a) Mac McClear Hinsdale (+5), Daniel Miller (+6), Kyle Kochevar Glen Ellyn (+8), Jackson Bussell Lincolnshire (+13) and Bennett Cotton of Chicago (+18).

LUKE GANNON of Mahomet IL. near Champaign and a former SIU two-time all -conference player in the MVC, shot 68-68 (-6) to survive an 88 players for 5 spots at the Olympic Club (Ocean Course) in San Francisco. So Gannon is in next weeks U.S. Open field.

Tommy Kuhl currently playing for the University of Illinois, looked good the first 18 holes in Florida at the Admirals Club in Jupiter Florida. But a 76 over the second 18 holes, saw Kuhl fall short of earning an open bid.

FORMER ILLINOIS OPEN Champion Vince India of Deerfield had a WD in Georgia, and didn’t play, but no reason given.

MOST ILLINOIS PLAYERS went to Ohio for their qualifier.

But at the Columbus qualifier at Kinsale Golf and Wedgewood CC, Timmy Crawford of Arlington Heights (E), Bryce Emory of Aurora (+1), Michael Devan of Rossville (+2), Tim Lin Hoffman Estates (+4) all did not advance. Tour professionals with local ties Doug Ghim and Luke Donald, both WD after 18 holes.

THE LONGEST DAY IS HERE!

TODAY is the 36 hole final qualifying for the U.S. Open.

So if your in, and you can go-low today, you will be playing at Brookline in two weeks.

There are several local players in the hunt for a spot in the open field. Northbrook’s Nick Hardy is one of them, and he is off to a great start in Ohio. Leading the field after playing the first 25 holes. So here’s hoping he holds on. But right now our other locals have some work to do. Because good golf isn’t always good enough, may some birdies find their way.

GOG Will recap the day in golf, later today when the results are known for our local players.

LADIES YOUR DAY IS HERE-tomorrow June 7th is Women’s Golf Day. This special day founded by Elisa Gaudet gives options for clubs to host the ladies, and hopefully get a few more women out playing golf.

Elisa Gaudet with the Women’s Golf Day logo at the PGA Show earlier this year.

THE LIV GOLF SERIES is coming up.

PHIL MICKELSON has just released a statement on the LIV Series website, he is back. It’s a good read, welcome back “Lefty”.

But the real question is, how well will it play out. Because for the players that do participate they face fines, suspensions and who knows what else.

The PGA Tour much to the disappointment  of many is not playing ball here.

Dustin Johnson seems to be the main name headed out to the event. But Johnson is far from the only name golfer that will be in the field. Time will tell how long the LIV series remains and what shape it’s in by the time September comes along and the LIV Series makes it to Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove.

THE RENOVATED ATLINS COURSE at the University of Illinois in Urbana is really nice. It’s a less than $100.00 price tag for 18 and a cart at any time of the week (top rate is $79.00 Fridays and the weekends).

Drew Rogers, and Illinois Coaches Mike Small and Renee Sloan did a great job making the golf course playable and challenging for the Division 1 NCAA golfers. But also for public players and Illini supporters and alums when on campus. So if your in the Chicago area, it’s worth the drive down to play the course. But do note* there are currently a lot of orange barrels blocking lanes on Rt. 57 in route to the Champaign and Urbana area. So if you are headed down, do allow extra time tot get to the golf course.

THIS WEEK if you would like to see some PGA Champions Tour Golf, it’s not far away up in Madison Wisconsin, at the Steve Stricker Am-Fam Insurance tournament. The golf course is University Ridge the home of the UW-Badgers team. Stricker and the American Family team put on a great show. It’s really nice to Steve healthy and back playing again on tour.

I Caught part of the season debut of GOLF360 TV, Dave Lockhart and Patrick Mannelly have a great new addition to the show, social media golf star Chicago based Katie Kearney. WELCOME TO THE HOME OF FIGHTING ILLINI GOLF-The Atkins Course at the University of Illinois-now open.

Illini Men’s golf coach Mike Small in the new “team room” for members of the men’s and women’s Illini golf teams.

OPEN FOR BUSINESS!

Because after 15 some months, the Atkins Course at The University of Illinois (formerly Stone Creek) is ready to welcome back golfers.

The Atkins Course renovated by Architect Drew Rogers, who spent plenty of time walking the layout with Illini golf coaches Mike Small and Renee Sloan has added yardage, and moved around the bunkers.

The new Atkins Golf Course has seen it’s yardage increase from 7,118 to 7,538, on the back “Orange Tee’s”. With the Blue Tee’s playing 6,759, the front “Red Tee’s” play 4,958.

The green complex from the 1st fairway.

With increased yardage, the golf teams at Illinois can now hit the best drives they have, and not be able to take advantage of a short golf course.

Illinois Men’s Coach Mike Small is wasting no time getting the course tested by many of the top players from both the Big Ten and the MAC Conferences.

Two weeks before the Big Ten Conference Championships is the Ohio State Keppler Invitational. This year as in past years, the Ohio State event was a two-day event. But with the NCAA limiting the amount of days Division 1 teams can play, the extra day was a concern for some programs including Illinois.

Additionally, the extra week layoff before the conference championship was also a concern to Small and other coaches. So with a new course to test out, what do you do. You schedule your own two-day event, which the Illini will host in 2023 the week before the Big Ten Championship.

CLICK HERE to hear the full interview with Illinois head men’s golf coach Mike Small.

So far the field has 7 Big Ten Schools and two schools from the MAC Conference, other schools are expected to join the field.

The Wall of Fame in the remodeled clubhouse.

Improvements to the golf course from the restoration include.

Full bunker renovation to Better Billy bunkers and pro angle sand, with the bunkers being repositioned.

Cored top 3-4 inches and regrassed 18 regulation greens and the main practice putting green.

Built a new practice green near the pro shop.

Created new additional tee boxes to add over 400 yards to the golf course, but with front tee’s also added. Fairway lines were accentuate certain features around the golf course. Improved lakes and bridges, with enhanced irrigation installed. The teeing area on the practice range was reseeded.

Holes 1 & 10 are now outside the pro shop, with pro shop staff able to view 6 holes from the pro shop. Built a new team room for the Men’s and Women’s Illini golf teams. Opened the Homegrown farm to table restaurant.

The homegrown restaurant bar area.

The donation from the Atkins family was $5 million to renovate the golf course, pro shop and build the Illini players lounge.

But part of the donation was land that surrounded the golf course, available for home sites.

Overall land value was $15 million dollars.

CLICK HERE to hear the full interview with University of Illinois Athletic Director Josh Whitman.

Top prices for 18 holes and a golf cart are under $100.00. This year’s Illini Golf Classic is September 18-19 at the Olympia Fields Country Club. So save the date Illinois fans and Illini Alums.

Welcome to the Sand Valley Resort in Nekoosa Wisconsin.

SANDY VALLEY in Nekoosa Wisconsin has announced the resort is expanding yet once again. With construction now underway.

Because there will be limited home ownership opportunities adjacent to the new experiences and the Sedge valley Golf Course opening in 2024.

“We have always said to our guests, ‘if you keep coming back, we’ll keep giving you more reasons to return,” said Michael Keiser, who along with his brother Chris Keiser, owns Sand Valley. “Sedge Valley gives us all something to look forward to.”

The 7th hole green site, on Sedge Valley.

Sedge Valley by Tom Doak will open in 2024, and will have some interesting green sites.

But for more on Sedge Valley see Sandvalley.com/sedge-valley.

But also to open in 2024, will be a new BBQ Smokehouse, with a BBQ pit and a line of craft beers. There will also be new interactive golf, with all-season simulators. During golf season the new six-acre putting course will open, with outdoor dining that will overlook the course. But indoor games will include a new arcade.

Because a place like Sand Valley isn’t known for water, it doesn’t mean there won’t be any. A new pool house overlooking Mammoth Dunes will open in 2023. The pool house includes, steam, sauna, cold plunges and eight massage rooms.

BUT IF YOU NEED A BREAK FROM GOLF-there’s Tennis. Because in 2023 the 13,000 square foot Sand Valley Tennis Center will open. The tennis center will have a bistro-style restaurant.

BUT IF YOU WANT TO PRACTICE YOUR GOLF, the practice facility will have a 500-yard range for you big hitters. There will also be an extensive short game and putting area. So if you need more, yes there will be indoor to outdoor hitting bays.

SO IF YOU WANT TO TURN THE RESORT INTO A HOME-there are 36 home sites surrounded by towering dunes by Sedge Valley. The homesites will overlook a 17 acre lake. But you can just own a cottage as well, if you don’t need a full home. First cottages will open in 2023.

SAND VALLEY is expanding, see it all at Sandvalley.com.

Titleist Tour Speed-ready to up your game.

TITLEIST IS ready to up your game as the northern golf season begins.

Because with the addition of two new new golf balls, your choices from the #1 ball in golf have never been better.

TOUR SPEED has been on the market for two years. It was launched with a high performance multilayer Urethane cover.

But now the reformulated core delivers high speed, and with a high flex casing layer that helps maintain a long game spin.

“The key to the development process was successfully reformulating the core and high-flex casing layer to perform in conjunction with the proprietary Titleist Performance Urethane (TPU) cover to our stringent quality tolerances, so the golf ball performs consistently on every shot.,” said Frederick Waddell, Director of Product Management.

Tour Speed has a 346 quadrilateral dipyramid Dimple Design. MAP is $40.00 Tour Speed is now available in the USA in White #1-4. But Yellow #1-4 is June 20th. Global markets starting June 20th. Titleist.com.

TOUR SOFT GOLF BALL is back in the third generation, with a response to golfer feedback with a new aerodynamic design, to create more distance off the tee.

The Titleist Tour Soft golf ball.

“The Tour Soft golfer prioritizes feel and seeks the softest possible, but they are also looking for an all around performance,” says Jeremy Stone, Vice performance,” said Jeremy Stone, Vice President, Titleist Golf Ball Marketing. “The new Tour Soft has been reengineered for improved performance tee through green.”

So with a 1.600 Tour Soft remains one of the largest core sizes in the Titleist golf ball portfolio. But with the same soft compression of the current generation. A core this size requires an extremely thin cover.

But while the 346 dimple pattern was not in the planning for Tour Soft, but after serious testing the 346 quadrilateral dipyramid ended up being the best,” Mike Madson, Senior Director of Research and Engineering. As a result, Tour Soft will have a lower ball flight.

Price will be $35 per dozen MAP. Tour Soft White is now available in pro shops, in both white and yellow # 1-4. So for more information please visit Titleist.com.
