It always ceases to amaze me when PR firms continue to screw up, of course in golf there is growing problem with that, because only a few people or firms can get how to promote golf the right way.

One east coast based firm, continues to try and convince golf writers that they are the pulse of a movement, that is trying to get golf championships moved away from courses, with a connection to our new president Donald Trump.

The latest load of humor comes from the same firm, that got nowhere with it’s attempt to move the U.S. Women’s Open away from Trump Bedminster. Well that won’t happen I promise you that. With that failed effort in the books, now the focus is to go after the Sr. PGA Championship. The same PR firms, supporting a few biased liberal organizations, are now saying that Sr. PGA Championship sponsor Kitchen-Aid is under fire because the championship is being played at Trump national Golf Club in DC.

Well guess what, there is no fire and Kudo’s to the PGA of America for not moving this championship, and the USGA for not moving the US Women’s Open.

Then again maybe there is a small fire after all, it’s the campaign of a small group group of people, going up in flames, as they realize their efforts will have no effect on the big picture whatsoever. It would have been a sad day for golf and sport in general, had any of the above named golf organizations bowed to pressure and moved their championships.

The 2017 Sr. PGA Championship sponsored by Kitchen-Aid will be played from May 23-28 at Trump National Golf Club DC, in Potomic Falls, Virginia. Defending Champion is Rocco Mediate.

It was good to see Northwestern alum Luke Donald playing well at his old stomping grounds, Harbour Town at Sea Pines Resort on Hilton Head Island this past weekend.

Donald was the co-leader after 36 holes, but could only move two more strokes under par on the weekend. That left him in a solo second place finish for the week. Donald earned 300 Fed Ex Cup points, and a check for the amount of $704,000 for his solid week of play. A few more starts like this for Donald, will hopefully put him in the field at his home club of Conway Farms in Lake Forest, when the BMW Championship returns in mid-September.

It was great being back on the air last Saturday, with the return of Golfers on Golf Radio. Yes, Saturday mornings at 9 AM our new day, and on Am 750 WNDZ.

Our new signal hits a home run into four states. Thanks to former producer BIGG Jon Vic checking in from the Milwaukee suburbs, telling us he was listening to the show, and the reports from out in Indiana were just as good. Thanks everyone, and 22 more weeks to go. That being said, we hope for a report from our 4th this Saturday, Mike Munro about the new restaurant that he and Mistwood/MCQ’s owner Jim McWethy have opened as of today in downtown Bensenville called The Green Street Grille. More details on that in the days ahead.

Len Ziehm expanding golf coverage into Wisconsin.

Our story last week told of how there were 28 nominee’s for the 2017 Class of the Illinois Golf Hall of Fame.

After the voting in this past week, the field has been narrowed down to 10 finalists.

One of them is longtime golf reporter and media guy Len Ziehm, who is one of our BIG 3 Partners on the internet. On May 10th the final voting will take place. I’ll be presenting on Len’s behalf to the voting panelists. Hopefully Len will be part of the 2017 Illinois Golf HOF class when the dinner rolls around at the Glen Club in October.

With the U.S. Open on the tee this summer at Erin Hills from June 12-18, the golf season is a short one for all the golfers who just love to come up and play Erin Hills.

Erin Hills will open for the year shortly after the final putt drops at the U.S. Open, come the 18th or if playoff is necessary the 19th.

But as you might have guessed, a U.S. Open venue open to the public will be very crowded once the championship is over.

The 117th U.S. Open will be the first U.S. Open played in the state of Wisconsin.

Better news is that there are still some tickets available to attend a rare Midwest appearance of the U.S. Open, that won’t return to the Midwest until at least 2027 at the earliest.

The Renaissance Golf Design team part of the Tom Doak design firm has created the new Stolten Brae at Gull Lake Resort, located of course in Augusta Michigan.

The golf course will be the sixth course at the resort, which is now Michigan’s oldest and largest golf destination.

Stolten Brae is a different design than the other Gull Lake courses, and Third-Generation owner Jon Scott worked with the Renaissance Team to build a championship links style golf course, that plays to a yardage of over 6,800 yards and a par of 71.

The Loop and Stolten Brae are not the only new courses in Michigan. The third course at Island Resort and Casino in Escanaba will open this fall. Sage Run was created by Michigan based architect Paul Albanese, who says the course is cut out of hardwoods but has some other land based formations called a drulin. This gives the course a little bit of a Royal County Down feel.

Dave Pelz and his short game schools are moving at the Grand Traverse resort and Spa. 15 clinics and instructional programs will be taught. Check the resorts website or pelzgolf.com for more details.

From July 31st to August 5th, the Skokie Country Club will host the third oldest amateur golf championship, when it conducts the Western Amateur founded in 1899.

The British Amateur and the U.S. Amateur are the only older amateur championships.

The Western Amateur is operated by the Western Golf Association (WGA).

Last month defending champion Dylan Meyer who was victorious at Knollwood Country Club in 2016, confirmed to Golfers on Golf and Chicagoland Golf that he will return to defend his title. His teammate at University of Illinois Nick Hardy will join Meyer in the field.

The field will include 156 top amateur players, and past champions include Phil Mickelson and Jack Nicklaus.

2015 champion Dawson Armstrong who won at Rich Harvest Farms, has also committed to play at Skokie.

2014 medalist at Beverly Country Club, Doug Ghim of Arlington heights will play along with two of his teammates from the highly rated University of Texas Gavin Hall and Scottie Scheffler.

The 2010 Western Amateur was contested at Skokie Country Club and Stanford Universities David Chung, hoisted the George Thome trophy, over players like Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed.

“We’re excited to be bringing the Western Amateur and our elite field of amateur players back to Skokie,” said Vince Pellegrino, WGA Senior Vice President of Tournaments. “We received tremendous support from their membership and staff in 2010, and Skokie features one of the finest courses anywhere in the Chicago area. This classic course has withstood the test of time, and pose a formidable challenge to these future stars of golf.”

Skokie is considered a Donald Ross design, since it’s his layout and design that is now in play and preserved. Tom Bendelow did the original 9 hole design in 1897. The club sits on Golfweek Magazines Top 100 Classic course list.

I have already written in past weeks about two organziations that are trying to create problems for the U.S. Women’s Open.

Ultra Violet and Color of Change, are trying to use women and golf to attack our nations 45th President Donald Trump.

This summer the United States Golf Association will contest the U.S. Women’s Open at Trump Bedminster in New Jersey. The club is owned by President Trump.

The two above organziations would like the masses to believe their concerns are about golf or women and women’s sports. They are not. They are simply politicial attacks on the White House and the President. The members of these two groups are entitled to their point of view. But both have hired PR firms, to send members of the golf media emails, in regards to interviewing their spokespeople.

However those emails show just how unorganized these groups and PR firms are. First up they accuse the LPGA of taking the championship to Bedminster. The LPGA has no input on where the U.S. Women’s Open is played, the USGA fully decides when and where the championship will be contested.

Perhaps the best news of all is that the USGA will not move the championship, regardless of any actions taken by these political groups. The USGA recently released a statement that says the following.

“The USGA has a deep respect for the freedoms we all enjoy in our country to express our views. We are committed to fostering a game that is welcoming and inclusive to all who choose to play it, and ensuring our championships are conducted without discrimination and in a safe and secure manner for athletes, volunteers, staff and fans. We are excited to provide a comprehensive test of golf for the very best female players in the world.”   USGA STATEMENT IN FULL.

Golfers on Golf fully supports the USGA, and it’s right to hold and contest it’s championships on the golf courses their committee’s select for such competitions. The Bedminster course should offer a great test of golf for this years U.S. Women’s Open.

The Illinois PGA has finally announced the second course to be used for the 2017 Illinois Open.

Briarwood Country Club in Deerfield has been named to join the Glen Club in hosting the state of Illinois’ golf championship.

The states history books will have some action this year, as the Glen Club will host for the tenth time, more than any other golf course. Briarwood returns after a 51 year absence. The last visit to Briarwood saw long time Illinois PGA Professional Emil Esposito win the title, his first of two titles (1966-1974).

“We are thrilled to announce two outstanding championship sites to host the 68th Illinois Open Championship,” said Carrie Williams, executive director of the Illinois PGA. “the Glen Club has been a longtime partner of the IPGA and is home to our Section headquarters, and Briarwood has both a tremendous history and a membership and staff excited to welcome back the state championship of golf. The two courses will provide challenging play and their close proximity to one another will ease logistics for players, fans, sponsors, staff and officials.”

The field  for the fourth year is 264 players. A majority of the field will need to qualify in one of eight qualifying events that will be held between June 26 and August 3rd.

The Illinois Open will be contested started on August 7th, with round two on August 8th. On those two days when rounds 1 & 2 are played, both courses will be in use. After round two the field will be cut to the top 50 players and any player within ten shots of the lead.

All remaining players after round two will be olay the Glen Club for the third and final round.

Briarwood was first opened at the Briergate Country Club in 1921, and was designed by the famed architecture team of Colt and Alison. The club was renamed in 1958. It now plays to a yardage of over 6,900 yards and to a par of 71.

The qualifer schedule is as follows: #1 June 26, at Willow Crest. #2 June 30, at Ravisloe. #3 July 5th at Maple Meadows. #4 July 11th, at Red Tail. #5 July 17th at Bartlett Hills. #6 July 19th at Makray Memorial. #7 July 26th at Deerfield. #8 August 3rd at site that is still TBA.

BREAKING NEWS-IPGA ANNOUNCES COURSES FOR 2017 ILLINOIS OPEN. The Glen Club in Glenview, and the second course is Briarwood in Deerfield.

A TRADITION UNLIKE ANY OTHER, yes it is. It is sport in the truest form of sport, most people get it, only a few people don’t.

When the week is over at the 81st Masters Tournament, another golfer will have a green jacket to wear. It might be a player who already has a green jacket, or maybe one that is getting his first. Regardless, it is always a special moment when the defending champion slips the green jacket over the shoulders of that years current champion. Even players who who don’t play the following year, or might miss the cut on Friday, are there on Sunday to present the winner his new green jacket.

Speaking of Sunday, another one of the slogans at the Masters is that the tournament starts on the “Back Nine on Sunday”, and there is nothing like the stretch run at the Masters, the best part is that you the patron, get to enjoy it for more than a minute like at a horse or car race, it lasts for a few hours.

The term “patron” even gives the average fan a little more status than they normally have, but if your on the hallowed grounds of Augusta National you need to act like it. There are plenty of “Pinkertons” around to make sure security and safety measures are enforced. There will be no running, screaming, or yelling stupid slogans from the Howard Stern show, the last one especially will get you ejected quickly.

THE NEW MEDIA center by some estimates might have cost the club just over $50 million dollars, and based on the pictures I saw (posted on my facebook page) it’s how you operate media coverage, media seating, media food and beverage the right way. If you want to present the product or control the message, this is how you do it. Most professional sports teams or colleges could learn a lot from Augusta National

SPEAKING OF FOOD AND BEVERAGE the Masters Tournament gets it right. There are no $8.50 cent domestic “watered-down” light beers. There are no $7.00 pizza slices or $12.00 burgers or sandwiches. They all run about $3.00, and beverages such a soda cost $2.00. There are no $5.00 bottles of water, they too run about $2.00. The famed Pimento cheese sandwich is still $1.50.

TELEVISION does not do the golf course justice, but most golfers that have ever taken a picture on a golf course with some sort of elevation change understand that. Augusta National is much more hilly, than CBS makes it appear. What CBS and the Masters do a great job of, is keeping commercials to a minimum. There is only two minute ad breaks, not five, there will not be countless promo’s for a new edition of some show four days away.

TRADITION, yes it starts early in the week with a champions dinner and par 3 contest, and then ceremonial tee shots by the greats of the sport and master history. It ends with the winner getting an invitation to keep coming back for years to come.

The Masters Tournament is a week in sports we all wish we could enjoy more than one week per year, it’s a special event in one of the few remaining cathedrals of sport.

THE WAIT IS OVER, Golfers on Golf Radio returns this Saturday April 15th on a new day, and a new station for 23 fun weeks of golf talk.

2017 will be a great summer to talk golf because there are plenty of great tournaments in the Chicago area, and the U.S. Open hits the Milwaukee area when it comes to Erin Hills the third week of June.

The tee time is still the same 9 AM, but new station is WNDZ 750 AM right in middle of the Chicago Am dial. (In between WGN 720 Am and WBBM at 780). So when you split the fairway right between those two big stations, you will find another big station and you will find us.
