The run is over for Colin Montgomerie, the two-time defending champion of the Sr. PGA Championship, saw his winning streak of Sr. PGA’s end right where it started in 2014.

Back in 2014 Mongomerie held off Bernhardt Langer his partner in the fourth round. This time Monty’s partner was Rocco Mediate, who held off the two-time champion.

The 2014 Sr. PGA Championship was Monty’s first major championship on either tour. Two Sr. PGA’s and one U.S. Sr. Open later, Montgomerie is looking for a his fourth major. It’s likely he will get it soon.

Montgomerie won his second Sr. PGA at the French Lick Resort in 2015.

Mongomerie called the changing moment in Sunday’s final round, as the par 5, 15th hole when he had a chance for eagle and Mediate could not do better than birdie, after he missed his putt and mediate made his that was pretty much it.

But Mediate’s hole out for birdie from the bunker on 17, that opened the lead to three was the final shot that Mediate needed for victory.

The 2017 Sr. PGA will be contested in Virginia, at Trump National D.C. in 2018 the championship will return to the Harbor Shores Golf Club in Benton Harbor Michigan.

SCARY TIMES out there in the golf world, as it seems that the world’s greatest sport, is being sucked into a cesspool of political correctness.

The PGA Tour stepped in a pile of it this week, with the moving of the WGC-Championship to Mexico (of all places) that has been held at Trump Doral on the Blue Monster Golf Course. The PGA Tour leaving Doral after 54 years, may god help us.

If there is any sport that embraces it’s tradition and history, it’s golf. The PGA Tour has moved away from other courses before and that’s not new. But it’s usually for good reasons, the course got too short and there was no room to lengthen it. Not enough space for galleries and tents, and or clubhouses that were old and not large enough to handle a tour event. However it appears in this case, the PGA Tour is scared of a golf course owner who could become our nations next president.

Maybe PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem is the one who should be investigated.

Yes, you will hear stories about sponsor Cadillac pulling out of the tournament, because of the resort being owned by Trump. There might be some truth to that, but it appears there is more to it than that, including Cadillac thinking the Champions Tour is more their demographic.

In a time where every sports body should thinking about creating events or games and keeping them in America=jobs and money. The PGA Tour thinks Mexico ???

The tour apparently has received assurances of extra security to avoid any kidnappings of any tour players that would attend WGC-Mexico. Okay, when you need these kind of assurances to have an event somewhere, do you really need to go there in the first place ?

Top world players are already thinking of skipping the olympic games, yes the olympics because of Mosquito’s. Think of what they will do when the chances of being kidnapped and held for ransom or being confronted by cartel gunmen becomes a reality. What happens south of the border is much more than what Robert Allenby had happen in Hawaii. PGA Tour players do like to drink a lot of water, need I say more.

This move has disaster written all over it. If you want to move it the championship, at least stay in Florida. Florida has plenty of golf courses in the Miami area that don’t belong to Trump. Then again maybe Finchem and the Tour have a plan in Mexico, like to have a golf course with a wall built around it. That would be right up their fairway. RS

Need more out of your driver, fairway woods and hybrids, ask for Fujikura shafts, the tour professionals are using them for more #1 finishes than any other shafts on most professional golf tours.   ______________________________________________________________________

The Fighting Illini Men’s Golf Team had their season end one match to early at the NCAA National Men’s Golf Championships in Eugene Oregon.

Illinois ranked No.1 or No. 2 the entire season, is going to finish the year ranked No.3 after a semi-final loss to the University of Oregon Ducks.

Illinois had a great 4th and final round in the stroke play to move up into the second seed of the match play part of the championship.

As the No. 2 seed they drew No. 7 South Carolina in the quarterfinals. That match went the way of the Illini with a 4&1 score.

South Carolina got the first point when Dylan Meyer lost 4&3. But Illinois came back and won all four of the other matches.

Edoardo Lipparelli, Thomas Detry, Nick Hardy and Charlie Danielson all earned a full point and Illinois won 4-1 to move onto the semi-finals.

Tuesday morning Illinois faced the 6th seeded Ducks and needed a win to advance from the final four and into Wednesday afternoon’s NCAA championship match vs the winner of Texas and USC. But it wasn’t to be losing 3-2.

“I thought Oregon played great,” coach Mike Small said. ” They made shots from off the green, they knew what they were doing and where to go. They made the putts you need to make in a match like this.”

The match came down to the final two matches, after Thomas Detry won the first macth for Illinois by a 5 & 3 score. Detry took the lead on the second hole and never trailed. Then Oregon came right back when Edoardo Lipparelli lost 5 & 4.

Nick Hardy trailed early but came back to tie his match, only to fall behind again on the back nine, losing his match 5 & 3.

Dylan Meyer gave Illinois hope when he took down Oregon’s top player and newly crowned NCAA champion Aaron Wise (finalist in the 2015 Western Amateur) 1 Up.

The final match had senior Charlie Danielson against Oregon’s Sulman Raza. Raza had an early lead, but Danielson tied things up and took a 1 Up lead after 8 holes. After Raza had the after 13 holes, Danielson squared things up on the 15th hole. But Raza won the next hole and held on for the victory by a score of 1 Up.

“Wehn you finish third in the country and you are ranked top 3 all year and you are disapointed at the end of the season, I think it shows a lot for this program,” said coach Small. “This was one of the best seasons the program has ever had and all of our kids are a part of it.”

Texas and Oregon will play for national championship. Local Illinois player Doug Ghim of Arlington Heights will play for Texas, along with 2014 Western Amateur Champion Beau Hossler who won at Beverly CC.

Four Illinois players were voted Ping All-Region. Charlie Danielson, Nick Hardy, Thomas Detry and Dylan Meyer. Illinois won nine tournament titles, their 4th straight regional, it’s seventh straight Big Ten Title, and finishes in the top 5 in the country for it’s fifth straight season. Mike Small was coach of the year in the Big Ten.
