IT’S ILLINOIS WOMEN’S OPEN WEEK
So that means for the first couple of days this week the Mistwood Golf Club is busy place.
The Illinois Women’s Open brings back memories of two people who really made this tournament what it is.
Founder-the late Phil Kosin, and Jim McWethy the late owner of Mistwood Golf. Sometimes without both Kosin and McWethy, you wonder how and or if the tournament can continue. But it’s back again this year, with a couple of more players than last year. So let’s hope it keeps growing moving forward. Credit to Director of Golf Andy Mickelson and the Mistwood Team. Credit to the Kosin family. But as Phil Kosin liked to say, until next time, keep it in the short-stuff. So ladies this week with all the fescue at Mistwood, it’s still great advice.
KUDO’s TO MISTWOOD TEACHING PROFESSIONAL Nicole Jeray. The Berwyn native led the Senior LPGA Championship in the middle of the second round. But in-spite of solid play in Round 2 and Round 3, fell back into a T-15. Now Jeray will compete for her third Illinois Women’s Open with no-warm up at Mistwood after coming back from Kansas City.
THE WWGA-Amateur at Sunset Ridge was quite a week. High heat and winds made things tough on the field. Defending champion Marissa Wenzler had a great title defense. Wenzler advanced to the quarterfinals of match play, before being eliminated.
The maintenance team at Sunset Ridge was outstanding to have the course playable 10:30 Am, after heavy rains struck overnight. 2023 WWGA-Amateur course White Eagle Golf Club in Naperville has some clean up work to do. A small tornado blasted through the property. Damage included 50 to 75 trees downed, the clubs scoreboard, patio awning and some golf carts. White Eagle will host the Illinois Open August 1-2-3.
IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR when there are too many tournaments all happening at the same time. When asked about scheduling conflicts the common answer is, that was the only day or only week they could do it or host it. Yeah right. So let the crazy-ness begin. According to Tim Cronin at the Illinois Golfer, Illinois Golf Hall of Fame inductee Charlie Bartlett wrote back in the 1950’s, its obvious that these golf organizations never talk to one-another before scheduling. 70+ years later, it seems nothing has changed.
THE ILLINOIS PGA SENIOR MASTERS at Onwentsia Club in Lake Forest was postponed, when the club received 6 inches of rain. No make-up date has been set.
IT APPEARS THAT THE BEN HOGAN EQUIPMENT COMPANY could be shut down permanently. Because My Golf Spy is reporting that it’s due to issues with Hogan’s major share holder ExWorks Capital of Chicago, that filed for bankruptcy. So stay tuned for details here.
PINE MEADOW GOLF CLUB in Mundelein is holding a 2-Person Senior Scramble (limited to 40 teams) on Wednesday August 10th. So call Pine Meadow at (847)-566-4663 (GOLF).
BLACKBERRY OAKS GOLF CLUB in Bristol will hold a Callaway Demo Day from 12-2 PM this Sunday July 31st. But on the clubs website, Chad Johansen Callaway Ambassador of Blackberry Oaks has posted a webinar with Callaway master wedge designer Roger Cleveland. Details at Blackberryoaks.com.
BARNEY ADAMS A LONGTIME EQUIPMENT INDUSTRY PROFESSIONAL was inducted into Texas State Golf Hall of Fame. Adams received the Lifetime Achievement Award.
THE ILLINOIS JUNIOR GOLF ASSOCIATION held it’s First Hall of Fame dinner at the Cantigny Golf Club. Where it announced it’s first inductee’s, headed up by Wheaton native and PGA Tour professional Kevin Streelman.
I AM STILL AWAITING WORD on when opening day will be for Settlers Hill in Batavia, which I do hear will be shortly. So stay tuned.
THE GOG BLOG returns tomorrow. RS
