TAGLAO JEERAVIVITAPORN is the winner of the 122nd Women’s Western Amateur Championship at Sunset Ridge Country Club.
Jeeravivitaporn who plays college golf at Iowa State University defeated Clemson Universities Annabelle Pancake by 2 & 1 score to take the title.
Jeeravivitaporn made a 12 foot birdie putt on the Par-3 17th hole to close out the match.
But the win didn’t come easy, as Pancake jumped out to a 3 Up lead after 8 holes.
A match that started just over three hours late, after heavy overnight rains pounded the Northshore area with several inches of rain.
The grounds crew at Sunset Ridge did an outstanding job getting the golf course playable for a tournament championship in the morning hours. Then membership started teeing off only 90 minutes behind the match. But there was no carts allowed out.
Pancake seemed in command, but after her tee shot found a fairway bunker on the 9th hole, she could not make her par. When Jeeravivitaporn made her par on the 9th hole, the comeback was on. After winning the 11th and 12th holes, the match was tied.
Jeeravivitaporn made par with two-putt on the par 3, 15th hole, she had her first lead of the match. But that lead came as a surprise. Because off the tee, it was Pancake pin-high and in closer to the hole. But it was one of the few putts Pancake was too aggressive with. Pancake pushing the putt 6 feet past the hole. Then Pancake missed the comeback putt for par and suddenly trailed for the first time.
The players both made par on 16, before heading to the par-3 17th hole. Jeeravivitaporn leaving 12 feet to the hole pin-high left, Pancake had a 25 foot putt from the left front corner of the green. But after a Pancake miss, Jeeravivitaporn closed out the match.
