The Palmer Cup is about to return to the hands of the United States.
Team USA entering Day 2 of play made a serious move on Team Europe to open up a 7 point lead heading into the final day of singles matches at Rich Harvest Farms.
TEAM USA leads by a score of 13.5 to 6.5 over Team Europe. There are ten points available on Sunday, all in singles matches.
On Saturday team Europe broke quickly from the gates lead by University of Illinois to be Senior Thomas Detry, who defeated University of Georgia’s Lee McCoy 5 & 4. But then Team USA responded with a point from Ollie Schneiderjans with a 2 & 1 win over Europe’s Jon Rahm.
But then after Europe won Match 3, a 1 Up win for Max Rottluff over Carr Vernon, and then halved Match 4, they failed to win a point the rest of the day. In match four Adrian Meronk had Kyle Jones of the USA 2 down with three holes to play, but lost holes 16 and 18 for the half point.
Then the USA won six straight matches. Robby Shelton over Rowin Caron 3 & 2, Hunter Stewart over Mathias Eggenberger 6 & 5, Anders Albertson over Clement Sordet 2 & 1, Jack Mcguire over Gary Hurley 6 & 5.
Beau Hossler had his match with Matthias Schwab go back and forth until it was All-Sqaure headed to 18. But when Schwab missed his 20 foot birdie putt and Hossler converted his 12 footer for birdie, the match was won by Hossler 1 UP.
Maverick McNealy in the final match held off Pep Angles by a 2 & 1 score.
Europe needs 15 points to retain the cup, the USA needs 15.5 or another 2 points to take it back.
The final day’s singles matches were scheduled to start at 8:30 but have been pushed up to 8 AM local time (CST). But heavy rains in the area expected overnight could delay them.
