AFTER DAY 1: USA 6 EUROPE 4
The morning foursomes matches started 40 minutes late due to threats from lightning, but then it was the USA that struck quickly winning four of five matches to take a 4-1 lead.
The USA was up 3-0 before Europe knew what hit them.
Lee McCoy and Ollie Schneiderjans won a 4-3 match over Thomas Detry ( U of I) and top rated amateur Jon Rahm. Europe was 2 Up after 3 holes, but the Americans were back in charge 1 UP by the turn.
Match 2 between Kyle Jones and Carr Vernon against Max Rottluff and Matthias Schwab took off on the back nine when the Americans won holes 12-13-14 and won 3 & 2. Match 3 saw Americans Robby Shelton and Hunter Stewart rally from 2 Down to win 3 & 2.
Europe got on the board when Pep Angles and Adrian Meronk closed out the Team USA anchor team of Maverick McNealy and Beau Hossler by a 3 & 2 score. Euurope won holes 12-13-14 to pull away.
The final morning match saw Americans Anders Albertson, and Jack Maguire hold on to win 1 UP over Europe’s Mathias Eggenberger and Gary Hurley. The USA was 3 UP on back nine but the Europeans made it All-Square on 17. But a par on 18 allowed the USA to win.
Europe came right back after lunch winning the first two matches to cut into the USA lead, at one point it looked like Europe could win all five matches. But the USA rallied to win two matches.
Match 3 saw Robbie Shelton and Hunter Stewart defeat Rowin Caron and Clement Sordet 1 UP. The USA didn’t lead in the match until a birdie by Shelton on the 17th hole.
In the days final match Hossler and McNealy bounced back from the morning defeat to win 2 & 1. McNealy’s birdie on the 13th hole gave the USA the lead for good.
