The 66th Illinois State Amateur is off and running at Cantigny Golf in Wheaton, cooler temperatures and swirling winds made first round conditions different than expected heading into the championship.

First round leader Chadd Slutzky shot a 6 under par 66, and holds a four shot lead headed into second round play. Today is cut down day at the championship. The 66 shot by Slutzky equaled the best round of golf at Cantigny in state amateur history. Cantigny has hosted the championship before. 126 players are in the championship run by the CDGA, that is celebrating it’s 100th Anniversary.

Cantginy Golf is celebrating it’s 25th year, and is now working with Kempersports management on mapping out the future of the property.

Sitting in second place after recording two under par 70’s are Matt Weber, Blake Johnson, and University of Illinois bound Nick Hardy. Kyle Kochevar heads up a group of players that are T-5 after carding 1 under par 71’s. University of Iowa player Raymond Knoll of Naperville, who played last week in the John Deere Classic after winning a spot in the Monday qualifier was 9 shots back after shooting 75. Round 2 is underway.
