Jasmine Koo (17) who has committed to play her college golf at USC, is the winner of the 123rd Women’s Western Amateur Championship.
Koo defeated Sadie Englemann of Austin Texas 4 & 2 in the championship match, at the White Eagle Golf Club In Naperville.
By hitting 15 of 16 greens in regulation, Koo was able to record 6 birdies during her round. So Koo’s name will join a long list of distinguished champions on the W.A. Alexander Cup. Some of those greats include Patty Berg, Nancy Lopez, Stacy Lewis and Christie Kerr.
“So I came into the week not knowing what to expect, and to win the whole thing is such an honor,” Koo said. “Because this is the biggest win I’ve had, so I’ll always remember this week.”
Koo played 100 holes over the course of the week. But Koo played those holes in 21 under par, with seven bogeys and 28 birdies. During stroke play Koo, finished in third place shooting a 36 hole score of 7 under par. Then see won five matches against college players. Koo wrapped up the match with a 15 foot birdie putt on the par-3 16th hole.
Englemann was proud of her efforts to make the championship match, and felt this year would be a good experience for the future. Englemann is a member of the NCAA national champion Stanford women’s golf team.
She has also played in the U.S. Women’s Open and the Augusta Women’s Amateur Championship.
Koo will now have a chance to be the first player to go-back-to-back in over 20 years. The last player was Meridith Duncan who accomplished the feat in 2000 and 2001.
The 2024 WWGA Women’s Amateur will be played in July, at the Onwentsia Club in Lake Forest Illinois.
USC’s Catherine Park was the medalist and No.1 seed heading into the match play portion of the championship. Park shot an 8 under par 64 in Round 1, and then followed it up with a 2 under par 70 in Round 2. Park’s 10 under par score was two shots ahead of the field.
