THE WOMEN’S WESTERN GOLF ASSOCIATION (WWGA) AND THE WESTERN GOLF ASSOCIATION (WGA) HAVE NEW CHAMPIONS.

THE  WOMEN’S WESTERN GOLF ASSOCATION has crowned it’s 95th WWGA-Junior Champion and it’s Jessica Mason, an 18 year old golfer from Westminster Colorado.

Mason held on to defeat Naperville’s Lisa Copeland who starts high school this fall. Mason won on the 19th hole by making a 30 foot birdie putt, that she did not think was going in.

She will attend Pomona College this fall in Claremont California. But Mason had the lead a 2 Up lead through 11 holes. But after three bogies, had to win 18 to force a playoff and she did.

So Mason wins the historic championship 50 years after the great Nancy Lopez won her first of three WWGA junior titles, Lopez won that title 50 years ago, at Prestwick CC home of this years championship.

WGA-BOYS JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP at NAPERVILLE COUNTRY CLUB.

Eduardo Derbez Torres a 16 year old from Mexico is the 2022, WGA Junior Champion. But it didn’t come easy.  Because Torres had to defeat Camden Smith from Ponta Vedra Beach Florida in a playoff. Both players finished with a score of 280-8 under par. But this was the first playoff in the Western Junior since 2015.

Torres needed a par on 18 to force a playoff. Then had to get up and down on the playoff hole to win. Torres tied the course record with a first round of 66. So he is the first player from Mexico to win the championship, and joins Collin Morikawa, Rickie Fowler and Jim Furyk as past champions.

Smith has committed to play his college golf at Mississippi State.
