University of Illinois Men’s Golf Coach Mike Small with the Senior PGA section trophy.

University of Illinois Men’s golf coach Mike Small, didn’t win it the easy way. But he found a way to win for the fifth straight time, in the IPGA Section Senior PGA Professional Championship Title.

Small had to defeat Beverly Country Club’s John Varner on the final hole of a three-hole playoff for the win. Roy Biancalana (Blackberry Oaks) was also in the playoff.

Small’s score of 12-under par (132) at the Bryn Mawr.

Because of the win, Small heads to PGA Village Port St. Lucie from October 21-24 for the Senior PGA Professional Championship. But joining him will be Varner, Biancalana, Michael Troy, John Cleary Don Morris, Kurt Rogers and Kevin Merion of Old Elm.

” I’m proud of myself today,” said Small. “I had a bad stretch going on the back nine, that included a four-putt. But I got past it and was able to pull it out.”

After hitting a tree with his drive on 18, Small had to get up and down from a greenside bunker to make birdie and join the playoff. At the Senior PGA Professional Championship, the top 35 professionals earn berths in the Senior PGA Championship in 2022. More details at IPGA.com.
