THE UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS is competing in it’s 13th straight NCAA Men’s National Championships, with 29 other schools at the Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale.

The NCAA national championships are underway, and after Round 1, Illinois sits in a tie for 10th place. But not far off the lead are the Illini, with many teams in the field bunched up. Illinois is at +7, with Texas Tech the leaders at 4 under par.

Jerry Ji  at even par (70), had the low score for the Illini. The Raptor Course normally has a par of 72. But that has been reduced to 70 for the championship and is playing at 7,289 yards.

The championship is played on the following schedule: Friday May 28th Round 1. Saturday May 29th Round 2. Sunday May 30th Round 3. But at this point the field will be cut to the low 15 teams, who will advance to Round 4.

Round 4 is Monday May 31st, then the field will be cut to 8 teams who advance to match play. Quarterfinals and Semifinals will be played on Tuesday June 1st, and there will be live coverage on The Golf Channel. The championship match will be played Wednesday June 2nd and televised on The Golf Channel.

Illinois is the only Big Ten school that advanced to the national championships. But Purdue senior Cole Bradley advanced to nationals as an individual, by winning the Indiana regional championship. Bradley is the son of Purdue head coach Rob Bradley. After day 1 Bradley is the individual leader, at 4 under par.

But while Illinois is making it’s 13th straight appearance at nationals, it has never won a national title. The best finish for Illinois was second place, when they lost to Alabama.
