Outerwear in golf, it’s forever changing and these days for the better.

The competition has never been greater to, not only get the golf business, but to get it right in terms of the product.

One of the leaders in the industry is Antigua, with it’s headquarters located  in Phoenix Arizona since 1976.

Several factors go into the designs of today’s outerwear by the leading manufacturers. The spring of 2016 lines are out, and Antigua is among the companies that are ready to take their products to the next level. Which includes being named again this year, as the outerwear supplier for the 2017 LPGA Solheim Cup.

Click here to hear our interview with Pam Miller VP of Operations and Customer Service at Antigua.

DSC06016 Pam Miller Anitgua DS

Pam Miller VP of Operations at Antigua. Visit Antigua.com or friend them on Facebook

Miller says that this year Antigua has brought in more Heather when it comes to new colors. They have backed off of very bright neon colors, that make others need sunglasses to look at you.

Antigua’s design team has created materials that golfers need on the course, that also work when your round is over as well.

Miller says it starts at the top with an owner that is an avid golfer, and if the companies products don’t for him, they work for golfers in general.

They need to fit comfortably, giving golfers the opportunity to swing the club without restriction. It needs to keep you warm on cold days, and with enough breathe-ability so golfers don’t overheat during play when it’s raining out.

Antigua gets feedback from touring professionals, including LPGA star Stacy Lewis about what’s needed on tour.

For more on the spring product line and what’s ahead with Antigua in 2016, visit Antigua.com. Look for Antigua in your local pro shop, or ask your professional to place your order through the local Antigua representative.

Day 1 was the demo day at the Orange County Golf Center, it was an outdoor event on a sunny and 82 degree day. Day 2 was IN the Orange County Convention Center, while it was raining outside all day long.

The PGA of America tells us that over 42,000 people are attending the show this year. Up again over last year, one number suggested an 8% increase in attendance and participation.

The equipment companies are here, except for one notable exception, Nike. Are people missing them, it doesn’t appear that they are, since there is so much else going on.

PGA or America President Derek Sprague and CEO Pete Bevacqua held court with selected media and took questions for over 30 minutes on a variety of topics. Everything from Growth of the Game, holding future events at courses owned by Donald Trump. What it could be like if Trump, a golf course owner is elected president of the United States.

It’s the day that golfers wait for all winter long, and that’s opening day of golf season. Even more exciting than baseball’s because it’s a chance for you to get back on track for a better year.

A chance to hit the shot you will remember the rest of your life, to win the match our tournament you have always to win, or to win it again. It’s a chance to play that course or take the golf trip you have always wanted to.

Yesterday I started my 2016 golf season at a course I didn’t expect to be the opening day course last week. Pinehurst #8 was supposed to be that course, it wasn’t. Instead Santee National Golf Club was, in the town of Santee South Carolina.

Before teeing off on Sunday, I had only played one round of golf in South Carolina. Now there has been two and both have been great courses. A few years back I played Pete Dye’s Kiawah Island’s Ocean Course, outstanding. Yesterday I found that Santee National is a pretty good golf course as well. I didn’t know anything about the design work of Porter Gibson, but now I’ll have to find out more. Gibson did a great job at Santee, making a challenging fun for all levels golf course. I’ll have more on Santee after playing another course Lake Merion today, coming up this week.

Congrats to Jason Dufner who won his fourth PGA Tour Tournament in a playoff, it seems like Dufner the former PGA Champion is starting to pull his game back together.

When you plan opening day for the 2016 golf season at the famed Pinehurst Resort, your expecting some sunshine and cool weather being January. But nothing like what Pinehurst was hit with as part of the big storm that has gridlocked the east coast.

No Pinehurst didn’t get buried with 15 inches of snow, but they got a couple inches and enough ice to fill all the drinks in the summer season ahead.

My route from Kentucky into Tennessee and then North Carolina was buried in deep snow, and included too much mountain driving. So I called an end-run and headed right into my current destination which is Santee South Carolina, about 55 miles Northwest from Charleston.

DSC03603 it is dome season DS

McQsdome.com

After barely getting out of my unplowed lot at the Marriott in Southern Kentucky, I headed down into Tennessee and through Knoxville.

By now it had warmed up from 20 to 29, and roads were clear and driving speed was back up to 65. Then it was down through Chattanooga, past all the signs that were encouraging me to see Ruby Falls and Rock City. Rt.75 south then takes you down to Atlanta. I knew from there I would head east and into South Carolina.

DSC05899 Front gate 2 ANGC ds

This driveway is talked about much more in April.

A quick glance at the map then made me realize, I would be going through a town that I had never been in before.

Augusta Georgia.

Missing out on Pinehurst was sure a negative, but how about turning that into a positive. After passing the Bobby Jones Expressway, I turned off on Washington Road, past all the fast food joints and chain businesses and found one of the great wonders in golf. That is Augusta National Golf Club, the home of the Masters Tournament. I got my BIG 3 Partner Tim Cronin on the phone, and received some good information from Tim on some recent Augusta National History.

DSC05902 Front gate 4 ANGC DS

The front gate was open on Magnolia Lane, so they must have known I was coming.

Yes it was January and the Masters Tournament was some 2 1/2 months away, defending champion Jordan Spieth was not even here yet for a practice round. Being it was only 40 degrees out, and earlier in the morning there was snow on the grounds of the Augusta National Golf Club, golf was not the item of the day.

Of course I didn’t have a tee time, a masters badge or even an invite from a member inviting me in for lunch.

DSC05908 Entrance gate ANGC DS 2

If you have your badge come Masters week, you enter here to head out onto the course, to view the golf.

But in the end, it didn’t matter. I was here and it was Augusta National, home of the Masters Tournament.

As I drove around the golf course, you can see some of the work going on outside the club, as ANGC is moving a nearby street, to arrange the parking situation a little better come tournament week.

I enjoyed snapping a few pictures of the famed city of Augusta Water Tower on the corner of the club, and checking out the various gates into the club. In spite of the fact you can’t see any of the holes, catching a glimpse of the clubhouse, Magnolia Lane, the new hospitality building, and a new building in the practice area, that was enough to get one excited about golf.

This year it won’t take until April to get really excited about the Masters for me, I feel like I’ve been there already. Now as I look out the window here in Santee, onto Santee National Golf Club, golf carts are driving by with golfers in them, and I’m ready to go tee it up right now. One look at Augusta National can do that to you, even if it’s from the outside.

Golf season is here. Go play. RS

July 11-17 at Panther Creek in Springfield Illinois

Apparently one Web.com stop in Illinois wasn’t enough for 2016, and then there was two, within a six week period in the summer ahead.

Panther Creek Country Club in Springfield will be the host of the Land of Lincoln Charity Championship, it will be played from July 11-17. This is the first year of a five-year deal, and the purse is $550,000.

Panther Creek was designed by former U.S. Open Champion Hale Irwin, and was the previous home of the LPGA’s State Farm Classic from 2007 through 2011.

There is no answer yet to if the dates will stay the same in 2017, when the John Deere Classic likely returns to the same week. (In 2016 the John Deere Classic will be played during the Olympic games in August).
